PENSACOLA, Fla. - The Carroll baseball team lost their third game of the Studer's Blue Wahoo Challenge Tuesday night, falling to Sewanee College on a walk-off bunt in the bottom of the ninth inning. The crushing 11-10 defeat is the fourth-straight loss the Pioneers have suffered. The game was rescheduled due to impending weather on Saturday.
Carroll made a valiant comeback effort, scoring four runs in the top of the ninth to knot the game at 10 apiece.
Lane Scott was one of three Pioneers with two hits on the day, going 2-for-4 with 3 RBI. Casey Mir also went 2-for-4 and Dalen Lamberson went 2-for-5 on the day to lead Carroll at the plate.
Carroll took a 3-1 advantage midway through the third inning, highlighted by a triple to the right field gap by Leo Matuga, which knocked in Gabe Lee, before Sewanee was able to score 8 unanswered runs, five of which came in the seventh inning alone. The Pios showed grit as they came back with two runs in the eighth and five runs of their own in the top of the ninth to tie the game at 10. Then, with a runner on third and one out, the Tigers sent a bunt back to the catcher. Both runners were safe and the Pios comeback attempts were stifled.
The Pioneers utilized five pitchers in the defeat including starter Brett Buzzelli, Noah Hoffman, Andy Buskohl, Connor Nolen, and Roman Maguire. The group combined for six strikeouts, giving up 17 hits, while allowing 10 earned runs and walking only one batter. Buzzelli tallied four strikeouts to lead the Pioneers on the mound.
Carroll plays their fourth game of the Studer's Blue Wahoo Challenge against #11-ranked Birmingham Southern College on Friday. First pitch for the game will take place at 7 p.m.
