SEWANEE, Tenn. - Carroll's women's lacrosse team got back to their winning ways Wednesday afternoon, scoring five fourth-quarter goals against Sewanee to erase a five-goal deficit en route to a 13-11 Pios victory. The two teams played evenly for much of the game, with each squad firing 22 shots in the contest. Carroll won the turnover battle, 26-21.
Carroll (5-1) got the scoring started when freshman
Elizabeth Wang continued her hot start to the season with an unassisted goal just one and a half minutes into the contest. Sewanee then scored three goals to take a 3-1 advantage into the second period. Carroll's
Elaina Phaneuf would cut that led in half with a goal nine minutes before halftime, but Sewanee (8-2) got that goal back just two minutes later. The Pioneers battled back to tie the game on goals by Wang and
Rebecca Hallman in the final minutes of the first half, knotting the score at four.
Sewanee grabbed the lead back just one minute into the second half, but
Grace Brockman had an answer for the Pioneers, with a goal of her own to tie the game at five with 10 and a half minutes remaining in the third quarter. Sewanee then took control with five goals over the next seven minutes. Carroll would cut into that lead in the final minutes of the third with goals by Phaneuf, Laren Fricke, and Wang (with just three seconds on the clock) to head into the final quarter trailing 10-8.
Two quick goals by
Abby Stas and Hallman tied the game at 10 with nine and a half minutes remaining. Less than one minute later,
Olivia Brome gave Carroll its first lead since the opening quarter on an unassisted score. Sewanee would tie the game once more with five minutes to play on a Brooke Sigmon goal, but Carroll wouldn't be denied, with Brockman scoring the game-winner with under four minutes to play, and Hallman adding an insurance goal just a minute and a half later to secure the victory.
Devon Duym played all 60 minutes at goal keeper for the Pioneers, making five saves. Her counterpart, Lily Jordan, also recorded five saves for Sewanee, while playing the entire game.
Carroll will now return home, where they'll host Edgewood College on March 20 at 5 p.m. from Schneider Stadium in Waukesha, Wis.
