WAUKESHA, Wis. - Carroll's women's lacrosse team improved their overall record to 6-1 for the second consecutive season Wednesday night with a convincing 17-6 win against Edgewood College. The Pioneers have now scored double digit goals in all six of their victories this season, averaging 14.7 goals per game as a team, which is currently the third-highest scoring average in the CCIW.
Despite the lopsided score, Edgewood (3-5) got on the board first, as Emma Raupp scored just 51 seconds into the contest. Less than a minute later,
Elaina Phaneuf found the net for the Pioneers (6-1), before scoring again one minute later off an assist from
Abby Stas, giving Carroll the lead for the remainder of the game.
Samantha Hurd then got into the action with a goal off an
Elizabeth Wang assist, but Edgewood would continue to hang around early, cutting that lead to one on a Kerry Costello goal midway through the opening period. Carroll scored the last three goals of the period, one from
Emma Kimps and two by Wang, to take a 6-2 advantage into the second period. In that quarter, Carroll didn't let up on the gas, scoring the first five goals, with two coming from
Lauren Fricke, and one apiece coming from Stas, Wang, and
Grace Brockman. Edgewood's only goal of the second period would come with just over one minute remaining until halftime, as Emma Raupp found the net once more, but Wang got that one back with her fourth goal of the day coming with just three seconds on the clock.
Wang picked up where she left off in the second half, opening the third quarter with her fifth goal of the contest. Stas then scored on a Hurd assist to give Carroll a 14-3 lead. After an Edgewood goal, Wang would score again, giving her six goals on the night, which is just three shy of the single game school record. Brockman and Hurd would each score in the fourth quarter as well, before a pair of late Edgewood goals capped the scoring.
With her six goals in this game, Wang now leads the CCIW with 33 goals on the season for the freshman. She also finished with three assists, giving her nine points, which is just two shy of the program's single game record. Brockman, Stas, Fricke, Hurd, and Paneuf each scored two goals, while Kimps finished with one.
Devon Duym and
Sydney Everett each played a half at Goal Keeper for the Pios, combining to make eight saves.
Edgewood was led by Raupp's two goals. Alexis Vogt played all 60 minutes between the pipes for the Eagles, recording 10 saves on the night.
Carroll will be in action again on Sunday, when they'll host Marian (Wis.). That game will begin at 1 p.m. at Schneider Stadium in Waukesha, Wis.
