CLERMONT, Fla. - Carroll's softball team continued to enjoy the fun and sun of central Florida on Thursday, splitting a pair of close contests at The Spring Games. The Pioneers Fell to Wisconsin Lutheran 4-2 in eight innings, before ending the day on a positive note with a 6-5 win against Saint Joseph's (ME).
The day's first game saw Carroll tie things up at two with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth on a bunt single by
Abby Curtis. That tie lasted into extra innings, which saw Wisconsin Lutheran win things in the eighth on a two-run single to right field.
Despite the loss, Carroll (6-8) out-hit Wisconsin Lutheran (5-8) 7-3.
Kiana Johnson and
Madison Strampe each recorded two hits to lead the Pioneers, with one of Strampe's hits going for a triple.
Riley Pavelka struck out three batters in 4.1 innings in the circle.
The day's second game saw Carroll jump on the board early thanks to an RBI dobule in the second inning off the bat of
Bridget Rath. Johnson then drove in Curtis with an RBI single to left center to double that lead in the third. The Pios would add another run in the fourth when Rath scored on a fielder's choice. Saint Joseph's cut that lead to one with a pair of RBI singles in the fourth, but Carroll added another in the fifth on a Rath single.
Saint Joseph's would tie the score at four with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but Carroll answered in the sixth when Johnson singled up the middle, allowing
Avery Sorochan to score. The Pioneers added another run in the seventh when Rath scored on an error, before holding on for the 6-5 victory, stranding one runner when the final out was recorded.
The Pioneers will bring their week-long Spring Trip to a close on Friday when they'll play Trinity (Conn.) and Mount Saint Mary (N.Y.) at 8:45 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. Eastern Time, respectively. Both of those games will take place at Hancock Park in Clermont, Fla.
