WAUKESHA, Wis. - Carroll's softball team split a doubleheader with Carthage Sunday afternoon, losing the first game 11-2 in five innings, before defeating the Firebirds 6-0 behind a gem of a game by Pioneer Pitcher
Andrea Kuhne.
In that win, Carroll (8-16, 2-4 CCIW) provided some early run support, scoring the game's first run in the top of the first on a groundout that allowed
Abby Curtis to score from third base. The Pios then broke the game wide open with a five-run fourth. That rally was started with an RBI double off the bat of
Madison Palasz, followed by an RBI single by
Madison Hoagland and a two-run single from
Addison Leck.
Kaitlyn Reed capped the scoring with an RBI single of her own.
That would be more than enough run support for Kuhne, who delivered another masterpiece for her second shutout of the season and fourth of her career. The junior righthander allowed just three hits in seven scoreless innings, while striking out two batters.
Offensivley, Carroll collected eight hits, with two coming off the bat of Reed. Curtis scored a pair of runs from her leadoff spot, while Leck recorded a game-high two RBI.
In the day's first game, it was the Carthage bats that got hot to the tune of 14 hits. The Firebirds scored five runs in the top of the fifth to take the game's first and only lead. Carroll added their first run in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by Leck, while the Pios' only other run came in the fifth on a
Kiana Johnson RBI single.
Carroll recorded four hits in that game, coming from Johnson, Reed, Leck, and
Sydney Raddeman.
The Pioneers will be in action again on Tuesday when they'll travel to Wheaton (IL) College. That doubleheader will begin at 3 p.m. in Wheaton, Ill.
