WHEATON, Ill. - Carroll's softball team split a pair of games with Wheaton College Tuesday afternoon, winning the first 3-0 behind a five-hit shutout by
Riley Pavelka, before dropping the nightcap 14-4 in six innings.
After a scoreless first inning in game one, Carroll (9-17, 3-5 CCIW) scored the first run of the day in the second on an RBI single by
Madison Palasz, which would be all the run support Pavelka would need, firing seven scoreless innings, while striking out seven Wheaton batters without issuing a walk.
The Pioneers would add another run in the fourth when
Avery Sorochan scored on an error.
Bridget Rath then capped the scoring in the sixth with an RBI single down the right field line, allowing
Kiana Johnson to score.
Carroll finished with nine hits in the game, with two apiece coming from Johnson and Palasz. Sorochan scored a game-high two runs, while also stealing one base.
The day's second game saw Wheaton (14-12, 3-3 CCIW) take their first lead of the day with a six-run third inning. Carroll climbed back in the game with two runs in both the fourth and fifth inning, but a seven-run seventh by Wheaton would end the game after six innings.
Carroll recorded five hits, with two coming from
Sydney Raddeman, who also scored a run. The Pios' other hits came from
Abby Curtis, Johnson, and Palasz.
The Pioneers will be in action again on Thursday when they'll step outside of conference play with a doubleheader at Beloit College. That doubleheader will begin at 3 p.m. in Beloit, Wis.
