WAUKESHA, Wis. - Carroll's softball team won game one of Saturday's doubleheader against Elmhurst 8-0 in five innings, before ultimately splitting with the Blue Jays after losing game two by a score of 2-1.
Carroll Junior
Riley Pavelka was outstanding in the circle once again, firing her second consecutive complete game shutout. She allowed just four hits, while striking out four, en route to her third victory of the season.
Pavelka would get plenty of run support from her teammates, as the Pioneers (10-18, 4-6 CCIW) broke through with a run in the bottom of the second on an RBI double off the bat of Senior
Reagan Goluch on what was the Pios' Senior Day. Carroll did most of their damage in the third inning, which saw six Pios cross the plate.
Kiana Johnson drove in two with a single to right field, while
Madison Hoagland also drove in a pair with a triple to right. Sorochan and Senior
Bridget Rath also collected RBI in the inning. Addie Leck would add an RBI in the following frame to cap the scoring.
Carroll finished the game with 11 hits, led by two apiece from seniors Rath,
Sydney Raddeman, and
Madison Palasz. Raddeman and Palasz also scored two runs apiece.
In the day's second game, Elmhurst (10-18, 1-7 CCIW) jumped on the board early with a two-run second inning, scoring on a bases-loaded walk and an RBI single. Carroll's lone hit in the game came in the top of the third on an RBI single by
Sophia Schmidt. Elmhurst's Ali Mockenhaupt then fired four hitless innings to secure the split for the Blue Jays.
Carroll's
Hannah Martin also pitched well in relief, allowing just one hit in 4.2 scoreless innings, while striking out two batters.
The Pioneers will be back in action on Sunday when they'll take on Augustana (IL) College in a doubleheader at Noon. Both games will be played at Kilgour Field in Waukesha, Wis.
