WAUKESHA, Wis. - The Carroll University baseball team suffered a setback on Saturday afternoon, losing the first two games of a three game weekend series to Millikin University. The Pioneers were overpowered defensively, getting defeated by a combined score of 25-1 in the two games.
GAME 1
Casey Mir went 1-for-2 on the day, scoring the lone run for Carroll after hitting for a double in the bottom of the fourth inning, the sole extra-base hit allowed by the stout Big Blue defense. Anthony Tado went 1-for-3. The game concluded after seven innings.
Millikin, which amassed 15 hits, scored right away when Carroll found themselves at a 3-0 disadvantage after the first inning. Caleb Buerhle, the starting pitcher for Millikin threw a complete game, only allowing four hits and facing 24 batters, only three more than the game minimum.
Casey Mir scored in the fourth, but the Big Blue continued to build on the lead until the deficit was too much to overcome, ending the game with a final score of 13-1 after seven innings.
Carroll utilized three pitchers, including starter Noah Meyer who allowed four earned runs on four hits with one strikeout and one walk through two complete innings.
Daniel Kalinowski and Conor Dunlavy also took the mound for the Pioneers, combining to yield nine runs on eleven hits the rest of the way.
GAME 2
Joey Appino went 3-for-4, three of the four total hits on the game for Carroll. Appino also tallied one stolen base, his 18th of the season which also maintained his unblemished steal attempts pn the season.
Millikin began the game with a leadoff homerun over the right field fence. Hoever, Carroll hung tight with Millikin, maintaining a manageable 1-0 deficit. The Big Blue put their first crooked number on the scoreboard in the third inning, building their lead to 4-0. They slowly but surely inched away, scoring at least one run in every inning except the fourth and the eighth, closing the game with12-0 defeat for the Pios.
Dylan Eckrote was the starting pitcher, yielding five earned runs on ten hits with two strikeouts and no walks through 4.2 innings. Joey Rivera, Chayce Schultz, Carson Gratz, Owen Ripley, and Ben Olsen worked on a "pitch-by-committee" basis to close the game out. As a unit, the five relief pitchers allowed six earned runs on seven hits, tallying four strikeouts and six walks.
Carroll looks to avoid the sweep tomorrow, Sunday, April 21, in the third and final game of the CCIW home series. Game time from Frame Park will be at noon.
