Carroll Picks Up Big Conference Win Against Carthage

WAUKESHA, Wis. - Carroll's women's lacrosse team earned a hard-fought victory Wednesday night, defeating intra-state conference rival Carthage by a score of 9-5. The Pioneers also held a 24-18 shot advantage in the contest, while forcing 25 Carthage turnovers.

Carthage (10-5, 4-1 CCIW) scored the first goal of the day on August Claridge's 71st of the season. Carroll (13-3, 3-2 CCIW) then answered with a Samantha Hurd goal to tie the game at one. Elizabeth Wang then gave the Pioneers their first lead of the contest later in the quarter with her 66th goal of the season, which breaks the program's single season record. Carthage added two more goals in the final minutes of the first to take a 3-2 lead into the second frame. The lone goal scored in the second came from Grace Brockman, tying the game at three with four minutes left in the half.

The Pioneers broke that tie with the first goal of the second half, coming from Wang, who would score once more in the quarter. Carly Hall then got into the action for the Pios with her fifth goal of the season in the opening minutes of the fourth, followed by goals from Wang, Hurd, and Elaina Phaneuf, giving the Pioneers a 9-4 advantage.

Wang finished with a game-high four goals, as she has scored at least three in 15 of the team's 16 games this season. Hurd added two goals, while Grace Brockman led all players with three assists. Sydney Everett played the entire game at Goal Keeper for the Pios, making eight saves.

Carthage was led by Claridge's three goals, while also adding one assist. Alessandra Almendarez played all 60 minutes at Goal Keeper for the Firebirds, saving six shots.

Carroll will wrap up its regular season schedule on Saturday against North Central (IL). That game will begin at Noon at Schneider Stadium in Waukesha, Wis.
