Carroll Drops Doubleheader to CCIW-Leading Vikings

CHICAGO, Ill. - Carroll baseball suffered a sweep to CCIW-leader North Park on Saturday afternoon, dropping game 1 22-5 in seven innings, and losing a game 2 heartbreaker on a walk off in the 12th inning, by a score of 8-7.

Nick Angus went a combined 5-for-8 on the day, with two doubles and a home run. As a team, Carroll had 22 hits, nine of which went for extra bases and four were sent out of the park.

GAME 1

Nick Herzog went 2-for-2 with a home run in the seventh and two RBI in the game and Leo Matuga went 2-for-2 with two singles. Three other Pios tallied at least one hit. As a team, Carroll collected seven hits.

Carroll threw the first punch of the game, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning, but the Vikings came back to score six runs in the bottom of the inning. Anthony Tado scored off a double by Dalen Lamberson in the second innings. North Park's high-octane offense then went on to score 17 unanswered runs over the next four innings. Carroll scored three more runs in the sixth and seventh, but it was not enough to continue the game as it went final after seven innings.

Carroll utilized four pitchers in the contest, including starter Noah Meyer, Brody Meyer, Jexel Valentin, and Nate Sternig. As a unit, the four pitchers allowed 17 hits, gave up 19 earned runs, and tallied three strikeouts. Noah Meyer suffered the loss, moving his record to 2-4 on the season.

GAME 2

Three Carroll players had multi-hit games in game 2, led by Angus who contributed one home run, one double and three RBI, while scoring two runs in a 4-for-6 showing at the plate. Lane Scott and Joey Appino both had home runs in the game as well, their fourth and third of the season, respectively.

Carroll had a good game two at the plate, tallying 15 hits as a team. Carroll lead for much of the game, maintaining a two-to-three run lead for the first eight innings. Carroll's hits were highlighted by a solo homer from Angus that bounced off the foul pole in the seventh inning. Scott contributed a solo homer in the third inning and Appino did the same in the sixth. It wasn't until the bottom of the eighth that North Park was able to tie the game, with three runs in the frame. Both defenses locked in for extra innings and it wasn't until the 12th inning that North Park doubled, sending the Pios home with a crushing defeat.

Carroll used three arms in the defeat. Braden Lewis got the start on the bump, going seven complete innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits with two strikeouts and walking one batter. Roman Maguire pitched one inning in relief, allowing three runs on three hits. Connor Nolen closed the game, going 3.1 innings and suffering his third loss of the season. Nolen tallied five strikeouts and allowed one run on two hits.

Carroll looks to avenge the doubleheader loss with a standalone home game on Sunday, April 28 to close out the CCIW series. First pitch will be at 3 p.m.
