Carroll's men's and women's track & field team saw five student-athletes qualify for next weekend's 2024 NCAA Division-III Outdoor Championships, doing so in eight combined events, as two Pios qualified in more than one. Doing the honors for the Pioneers are
Jimmy Hinkley in the Hammer Throw and
Steven Hermsen in both the Discus and Shot Put, while
Maria Falk and
Cate Gudaitis qualified in the Shot Put and Discus, respectively, for Carroll's women's team.
Vanessa Uitenbroek highlighted Carroll's qualifications by making the cut in three different events - Shot Put, Discus, and Hammer Throw. All five of Carroll's qualifiers each also appeared at Outdoor Nationals last year.
With two entries in this year's Outdoor Nationals, Hermsen will finish his storied career as an 11-time NCAA Championship qualifier. The Graduate Student from De Pere, Wis., will have an opportunity to become an unprecedented four-time National Champion in the Discus at next weekend's meet in Myrtle Beach, S.C. He is seeded third in this year's event with a mark of 57.74m in the 22-person field. Hermsen is seeded 12th in the Shot Put with a mark of 16.92m. Hermsen earned All-American status in both of those events at last year's Nationals.
Hinkley, a Graduate Student from Grayslake, Ill., enters next weekend's meet seeded ninth in the country with a mark of 60.45m in the Hammer Throw. This marks the third NCAA Championship qualification of Hinkley's career after earning the distinction in the same event during each of the last two years.
A Junior from Kaukauna, Wis., Uitenbroek is competing in three events at Nationals for the second consecutive season, increasing her career NCAA Championship appearances to 11. She enters the Discus competition seeded number one in the country with a school and conference-record throw of 50.88m. This year's CCIW Women's Field Performer of the Meet, Uitenbroek is also seeded third next weekend in the Shot Put (14.83m) and 10th in the Hammer Throw (54.47m). She was Carroll's lone Indoor National Championships qualifier in March, and will try to duplicate her success in last year's Outdoor Nationals, which saw Uitenbroek earn All-American status in both the Discus and Shot Put.
Gudaitis is a Graduate Student from Arlington Heights, Ill., who is searching for her third consecutive All-American performance in the Discus. She is seeded 18th in that event with a mark of 46.12m.
A Junior from Oshkosh, Wis., Falk qualified for Outdoor Nationals in the Shot Put for the second consecutive season with a mark of 14.00m, which is 13th in Division-III. She is making her third trip to Nationals, as she competed in the 2023 Indoor National Championships as well.
