Carroll Splits Two Matches on Opening Day

JACKSONVILLE, IL - Carroll Women's Volleyball opened the 2024 season with a 1-1 record on Friday evening. The Pios defeated Dominican University (IL) in straight sets in the first match and narrowly fell to Adrian College in the nightcap match, losing 3-2 in a back-and-forth match. 

MATCH 1 vs Dominican (IL) 

Carroll stole straight sets from the Stars in the season opener, posting scores of 20-14, 25-12, 25-20. Freshman Bronwyn Rowse led the team with eight points, tallying eight kills in 17 attempts . As a team, Carroll posted a .213 attack percentage, getting 27 kills in 75 attempts with only 11 errors. Senior Grace Perret also contributed seven kills with zero errors, while Junior Taylor Raley delivered six service aces. On the defensive end, junior Maggie McGough led the Pioneers with eight digs.  

MATCH 2 vs Adrian College 

In the nightcap match, Carroll dropped a tightly contested battle to Adrian, winning the first set 25-10 and fourth set 25-14 with their backs against the wall, before ultimately falling in the fifth set 15-9. Sophomore Kylie Wittnebel led the team with 10 kills in 28 attempts, with a .214 kill percentage. Senior Rebekah Andreae led the team with a .429 kill percentage, striking seven kills in 14 attacks. Freshman Ashley Miller and sophomore Peyton Depies secured double digit set numbers for the first time this season, getting 18 and 16 sets, respectively. Miller also had three service aces to lead the Pios. On the defensive, Perret and Wittnebel both tallied a block for the Pioneers, while McGough led the team with 23 digs. 

Carroll returns to action when they close out the Illinois College Invitational with two more games on Saturday. The first will be at 10 a.m. against Webster University, followed by UW-La Crosse at 2 p.m.
