LA CROSSE, WI. – Pioneer men's tennis won a thriller in the heat against UW-Lacrosse on Sunday afternoon, thanks to tiebreaker heroics in singles play.
The Pioneers (1-1 0-0 CCIW) made the trip to Lacrosse (0-1 0-0 WIAC) in search of their first victory of the fall season. Carroll got off to a slow start dropping all three doubles matches. The senior Spanish duo of Dani Ezcurra and Adrian Gomez fell short at one 5-7.
Falling down 0-1, the Pios looked to bounce back with a strong singles performance. They would deliver, winning 4 of the 6 matches to ensure a 4-3 victory. At one singles, Adrian Gomez defeated junior Luke Hinchcliffe 6-3 6-2. Ryan Labelle dominated the six singles match, winning 6-3 6-0. The real heroics came from captain Jack McCaffrey at four and Andrew Labelle at three. McCaffrey won in a tiebreaker 6-0 3-6 10-6 against Nikko Vilwock. Andrew Labelle won the first set 6-1, but in a battle with the heat, dropped the second set 3-6. Labelle fell down quickly in the tiebreaker 1-5 but ended up finding his edge to win 10-7.
Carroll returns home victorious, they will be back in action on Wednesday, September 18th for a match against Concordia Wisconsin at 4:00 PM.
