ST. PETER, Minn. – Carroll's women's tennis team competed in the ITA Regional Tournament and Midwest Open Tournament this past weekend.
In the ITA draw, Carroll sported two athletes,
Natasa Pupovac and
Katherine Trifilio. Both won their opening rounds in singles against Bethel and Coe College. Pupovac took the victory 6-2, 6-0 over Lisey Langus of Bethel, while Trifilo won 6-1, 6-4 over Addison Leasure of Coe. In the second round, Trifilio fell to UW-Lacrosse's Shelby Roth. Pupovac took on fifth seeded Sam Fuchs of UW-Eau Claire. After a tough 5-7 lost in the first set, Pupovac fell 1-6 in the second. They both elected doubles for consolation.
In the Midwest Open, Carroll's
Makayla Counsell took on Maya Kunze of UW-Stevens Point, winning 6-2, 7-6 (8-6). Counsell then took on Edgewood's Cassie Henderson, but fell 6-7 (5-7) 1-6.
Gracie Niebler and
Erin Horzewski also competed in the Midwest Open for Carroll. Niebler lost in heartbreaking 4-6, 4-6 fashion to UW-Eau Claire. Horzewski was defeated by UW-Whitewater. In the consolation draw Horzewski managed a comeback victory against UW-Stevens Point winning 8-6 after falling down 3-6 early. Counsell and Niebler were defeated in the first round of their consolation draws by Central College and St. Benedictine respectively.
In ITA doubles, the seeded duo of Pupovac and Trifilio, unfortunately had an early demise. Losing in the first round to Cornell College twin duo Mac and Tansy Graves. However, there is a silver lining as the star Carroll duo was able to go on a run and defeat Grinnell, Macalester, and Luther to reach the final of doubles consolation bracket. They faced Gustavus Adolphus, the hosting team, and ended up victorious finishing the match 8-5 and being crowned a consolation bracket champion.
The Carroll women look to continue their conference season next Wednesday at Elmhurst.
