Carroll Reaches Century Mark In Win Over Wheaton (IL)

WAUKESHA, Wis. - For the first time in 33 games, Carroll's women's basketball team has reached triple digits, defeating Wheaton (IL) by a score of 100-79 Saturday afternoon in front of Pio players past and present on what also served as Carroll's annual Alumni Basketball Day celebration. The Pioneers. That marks the Pios' sixth consecutive victory against Wheaton (IL).

Carroll (10-5, 5-1 CCIW) shot the lights out on this night, converting 53 percent (31-58) of their shots, including a scintillating 63 percent (19-30) after halftime. The Pios also made 13 three-pointers on the night, which is just three shy of the program's single-game record, shooting 54 percent (13-24) from behind the 3-point line. Carroll also converted 81 percent (25-31) of their free throws. Wheaton (7-7, 2-4 CCIW) was just as successful shooting the ball, making 55 percent (33-60) of their shots and 39 percent (7-18) of their threes.

The Pioneers began the game on a 6-1 run, leading for all but the first 25 seconds in the game. After one quarter of play, Carroll held a 23-15 advantage. The two teams played evenly in the second quarter, with Wheaton cutting the lead to six, before Carroll pulled ahead by 10 at intermission.

Carroll continued to hold the Thunder at bay in the second half, taking an 11-point advantage into the final quarter. The Pios would then turn up the defensive pressure, which allowed them to force some turnovers and extend their lead, taking their largest lead of 22 in the final frame on a 3-pointer by Natalie Palzkill.

Junior Emilie Wizner led all scorers with 24 points, making six 3-pointers for the Pios, which is just two shy of the program's single game record, while also recording four steals. Natalie Gricius added 22 points, four rebounds, and three assists, while Olivia Rangel finished with 12 points, five rebounds, four assists, and five steals. Julia Lokker and Katie Barger finished with 11 and 10 points, respectively, while Palzkill posted nine points and eight rebounds in 14 efficient minutes off the bench.

Wheaton was led by Annika Richardson's 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting, to go along with six assists. Lily Caddow added 13 points and five rebounds, while Jenna Hunter scored 12 points off the bench for the Thunder.

The win keeps the Pioneers in second place of the CCIW standings, just one game behind #2 Illinois Wesleyan. Carroll will try to keep things rolling next Saturday when they'll travel to Augustana (IL). That game will begin at 2 p.m. from Carver Center in Rock Island, Ill.
