WAUKESHA, Wis. - Carroll's women's basketball team trailed for just 45 seconds Wednesday night, en route to a dominating 89-63 home victory against North Park University. The Pios applied pressure on the defensive end for much of the game, forcing North Park into 27 turnovers, which Carroll turned into 30 points. The Pios also scored 12 second chance points, 52 points in the paint, and 24 points via fast break.
Olivia Rangel gave Carroll (9-5, 4-1 CCIW) the game's first lead on the opening possession, but North Park (3-11, 0-5 CCIW) answered with a 3-pointer to take their only lead of the contest. The Pios would answer less than one minute later with a
Natalie Gricius jumper to take the lead for good, which was the beginning of a 7-0 run by the Pioneers. North Park would cut it to one later in the quarter, before tying the score at 14 in the final seconds. Leading by six mid-way through the second period, Carroll closed the half on a 9-4 run to take an 11-point advantage into halftime.
North Park hung around at arm's length for the first several minutes of the third quarter, before Carroll ended the period on a 16-7 run to take a 20-point lead into the final quarter. The Pioneers' largest lead of 30 came in the final minutes on a
Julia Lokker layup.
Carroll shot 48 percent (34-71) from the field on the night, including 31 percent (4-13) from 3-point range. Twelve Pios appeared in this game, with 11 of them scoring at least two points. Rangel led all scorers with 24 points, to go along with six rebounds, seven assists, and three steals in just 28 minutes. Gricius was also efficient, posting 20 points in 21 minutes of work, while also pulling down a team-high nine rebounds.
Emilie Wizner and
Chloe Halverson each scored nine points.
North Park converted 40 percent (20-50) of their shots, while making 20 percent (3-15) of their 3-pointers. The Vikings were led by Caroline Long's 17 points, while Evelyn Abundes posted a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds. Aliyah Hershberger added 10 points.
Carroll will try to keep things running smoothly on Saturday when they'll host Wheaton (IL) College on what will be the Pioneers' annual Alumni Basketball Day. The women's Alumni Game will begin at 10 a.m. that day, with the Pioneers tipping off against Wheaton at 2 p.m.
