Late Layup Lifts Pioneers Over Beloit

WAUKESHA, Wis. – Carroll men's basketball earned its first win of the 2025-26 season in dramatic fashion, edging Beloit College 63-61 on Wednesday night at Van Male Field House.

Trailing by eight at halftime, the Pioneers (1-1) mounted a second-half comeback behind clutch shooting and defensive stops. Carroll outscored Beloit 37-27 after the break, capped by a game-winning layup from sophomore guard Michael McNabb with 18 seconds remaining.

McNabb finished with 19 points on 6-of-11 shooting, including two three-pointers and a perfect 5-of-7 from the free-throw line. He scored seven of Carroll's final 12 points, including the go-ahead basket in the paint. Senior forward Lamar Smith also tallied 19 points and added six rebounds, while Jacob Naber contributed nine points and a team-high seven boards.

Carroll shot 43.1 percent (22-51) from the field and 31.6 percent (6-19) from three-point range, while converting 61.9 percent (13-21) at the line. The Pioneers held Beloit to 38 percent shooting and just 22 percent (5-23) from deep, while forcing 17 turnovers and scoring 20 points off those miscues.

Beloit (0-3) led by as many as 10 in the first half and briefly regained the lead late in the second after a three-pointer by Anthony Carter. Semaj Roy paced the Buccaneers with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Carter added 13 points and four steals.

Dennis Estepp hit two clutch free throws with 43 seconds left to tie the game at 61, and Carroll's defense held firm on Beloit's final possession to secure the win.

The Pioneers return to action on Friday, November 14, traveling to face UW-Superior in the UW-Platteville Tournament. Tip-off is set for 5pm.
