WAUKESHA, Wis. – Carroll University women's basketball earned a hard-fought 67–61 victory over Wartburg College Saturday afternoon at Van Male Fieldhouse. The Pioneers improved to 3–2 overall with the win.
After a slow start offensively, Carroll trailed 14–12 after the first quarter and entered halftime tied at 24–24. The Pioneers erupted in the third period, shooting 68.8% from the field and outscoring Wartburg 26–20 to seize control. Carroll built its largest lead of 11 points early in the fourth quarter and held off a late Wartburg push to secure the win.
Natalie Gricius led the way with 22 points, going 7-of-12 from the field and 7-of-10 at the line, while adding seven rebounds and three assists. Emilie Wizner added 17 points, shooting 7-of-17 and hitting two three-pointers, and Julia Lokker chipped in 15 points with a pair of threes. Carroll finished the game shooting 41.0% overall, including 5-of-21 from three, and converted 12-of-18 free throws.
Defensively, the Pioneers forced 26 Wartburg turnovers, turning them into 26 points, and dominated in transition with 15 fast-break points. Carroll also held a 32–26 edge in points in the paint and received 18 points from the bench.
Wartburg (1–4) was paced by Grace Hennessy with 20 points and Katie Boulanger with 18. The Knights shot 43.4% from the floor but were undone by turnovers and Carroll's second-half surge.
Carroll returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 25, hosting Chicago at Van Male Fieldhouse. Tip-off is set for 6pm.
