Grinding Out A Legacy: Carroll Baseball's 2025 Redemption Begins

The Carroll University baseball team is entering the 2025 season with a renewed sense of purpose and an unwavering determination to climb back into the top of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) standings. After a run of four consecutive CCIW tournament appearances came to an end last season, the Pioneers are determined to start a new streak, this time with a championship in their sights.

The Pioneers' journey begins on Sunday, February 23, when they will face Berea in a series that has been moved to O'Fallon, Ill. The two teams will play a single game on Sunday, followed by a scheduled doubleheader on Monday. It's more than just a season-opening series; it's a chance to set the tone for a season of redemption.

BUILDING ON A LEGACY: A TEAM READY TO GRIND

Coming off a disappointing end of their postseason streak, Carroll is fueled by veteran leadership and a relentless offseason work ethic. Head Coach Stein Rear and his staff have emphasized fundamentals, but the defining trait of this team is their self-described "grinder" mentality.

"We're a group that embraces the suck," senior Roman Maguire said. "That's where we grow. We're here to outwork everyone."

For the Pioneers, this season is about resilience and unfinished business.

"Missing the tournament last year lit a fire under us," Senior Joey Rivera added.

LESSONS FROM THE PAST: COHESION AND EXECUTION

Last season reinforced the importance of playing complementary baseball. With a mix of returning talent and fresh faces, the seniors are stressing chemistry and execution on the mound.

"Last year, we had the pieces, but we need quick innings, to limit walks, and get ahead of hitters," said Maguire.

Offseason bonding has also strengthened the team's foundation.

"We've been hanging out a lot, building that trust," Senior Lane Scott explained. "It's showing in how we practice and how we push each other."

Rivera echoed the confidence in the roster: "The talent's there, most of our core is back. It's about putting it all together."

THE BEREA CHALLENGE AND BEYOND

The season opener at Berea College presents an immediate test. The Mountaineers, who took two of three from Carroll last season, are known for their aggressive baserunning and scrappy play.

"Starting with a win would be huge for our confidence," Scott said. "Berea's tough, so we have to come out strong."

Beyond opening weekend, the Pioneers are focused on key CCIW matchups that will define their postseason chances. Their game plan is clear: throw strikes, force weak contact, and grind out wins.

"If we keep the ball in the strike zone and trust our defense, we'll be in every game," Maguire noted.

DEFINING THE SEASON: GRINDERS WHO EMBRACE THE SUCK

When asked to sum up their identity, the seniors didn't hesitate.

"Grinders," Scott said firmly. "We're the team that puts in the work, no matter what."

Maguire added his own twist: "We embrace the suck. It's about enduring the hard stuff to come out better."

That mindset will carry them through a season of challenges as they aim to start strong and finish stronger.

A MESSAGE TO CARROLL FANS

With a competitive season ahead, the Pioneers are calling on their supporters to be part of the journey.

"Expect great things from us," Maguire urged. "Follow along and see us fight for it."

The Carroll University baseball team isn't just chasing wins, they're chasing a legacy. As they open the 2025 campaign against Berea, they're ready to prove they're a force to be reckoned with.
