Carroll Defeats Gordon; Falls To Northwestern (MN) In Florida Split

BARTOW, Fla. - Carroll's softball team continued their hot start to the 2025 season Tuesday, as the Pioneers defeated Gordon 7-6, to move to 4-1 on the season, before falling to Northwestern (MN) 8-0 in the nightcap.

GAME 1 vs. Gordon
Gordon started the scoring on an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning, but Carroll grabbed the lead in the third on RBI singles by Abby Curtis and Kali Stanchina. The Pios would add two more runs on a ground-out in the fourth, before adding three insurance runs in the seventh.

That rally was started with an RBI single off the bat of MK Dusza, while Avery Sorochan drove in another with a triple to right field and Allison Garski recorded an RBI single down the right field line. That final run proved to be the difference, as Gordon mounted a comeback that saw them score five runs in the bottom of the seventh, but the potential-tying run was thrown out in a rundown at third on a single which ended the game.

Carroll finished with 12 hits, with three coming from Curtis and two apiece by Garski and Val Osthoff. Makayla Wall (2-1) continued her great start in a Pio uniform with the win, allowing one earned run on just two hits in five innings of relief. Mya Schneider earned her first career save for the Pioneers.

GAME 2 vs. Northwestern (MN)
The day's second game saw Northwestern jump on the scoreboard early with a first-inning inside-the-park home run which scored two runs. The Eagles would add four more runs in the fifth, scoring on a two-run single and a two-run double, before adding two more runs in the seventh.

Carroll managed three hits in the contest, coming from Stanchina, Osthoff, and Jenna Andler. Riley Pavelka (2-1) recorded three strikeouts in five innings, as she suffered her first loss of the season.

The Pioneers have an off day on Tuesday, before getting back on the field Wednesday against SUNY Polytechnic Institute and Penn State Brandywine. Those games will begin at 2 and 4:15 p.m., respectively, at DiamondPlex - B in Winter Haven, Fla.
