WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Carroll's softball team improved their season record to 7-3 on Thursday, splitting a pair of games that saw them fall 5-1 to Western New England, before defeating Marywood University 5-4.
GAME ONE vs. Western New England (5-4)
The day's first game saw Carroll fall behind early when Western New England recorded an RBI single in the top of the second. They would add two more runs in the third, scoring on an error and another RBI single, before Carroll scored their only run in the bottom of that inning on a
Kiana Johnson RBI single. Western New England would add two more insurance runs in the fifth.
The Pioneers registered five hits from five different players.
Makayla Wall (4-2) suffered the loss, allowing three earned runs on eight hits and striking out four in 5.1 innings of work.
Alyssa Cebreros was effective in relief, tossing 1.2 innings of one hit ball.
GAME TWO vs. Marywood University (2-5)Â
Carroll controlled their second game of the day from the very beginning, scoring in the top of the first on an RBI single off the bat of
Kali Stanchina.
Kiana Johnson then drove in two more runs on a ground-out in the second, before Marywood scored their first run on a bases loaded walk in the fifth.
Carroll would score two much-needed insurance runs in the sixth on RBI singles from
Gianna Buske and
Abby Curtis. Marywood rallied in the bottom of the seventh, scoring three runs, but ended the game with a bases-loaded strikeout.
Riley Pavelka (4-1) earned the win, allowing just one earned run on four hits, while striking out seven in 5.1 innings. Carroll's offense produced eight hits, with Curtis going 2-for-4 from her spot atop the Pios' lineup.
Carroll will bring their Spring Break trip to a close on Friday when they'll battle Curry and Wittenberg at 9:30 a.m. and Noon ET, respectively. Both games will be played at Bartow Sports Complex Field 8 in Bartow, Fla.
