HANOVER, Ind. - Carroll men's lacrosse concluded their Spring Break trip with a matchup against Hanover College on Saturday afternoon, falling by a score of 10-5. Carroll narrowly ousted Hanover's looks at goal, taking 43 shots to the Panthers' 41.
After moving the game start time up to attempt to beat the rain and still being delayed nearly an hour to lightning, Hanover (6-2) was the first team to regain their legs as the Panthers scored nearly six minutes into the game. Hanover immediately followed with another goal less than 20 seconds later and gained a comfortable 4-0 advantage with two more goals in the final eight minutes of the opening period.
Zachary Szuba finally cracked the scoreboard for the Pioneers three minutes into the second quarter, finding the back of the net off an assist from Caden Dohm. After two more Hanover goals, the Pioneers gained momentum with Anthony Defillippis scoring two goals and Declan McMahon chipping in one more in the closing four minutes of the period, to bring Carroll within a manageable 6-4 deficit after the three unanswered goals from Carroll. The Panthers answered once again with two more goals in the final 150 seconds to bring the two teams into the break with an 8-4 Pioneer deficit.
The second half was much the opposite of the first, with both defenses standing strong as Brady Conwell scored once in the third and Hanover only scored twice more, early in both quarters. Both teams had numerous attacks, but neither team could capitalize and when the clock hit zero, the scoreboard read 10-5 in Hanover's favor, sending Carroll home with an 0-2 spring break record, but with very valuable experience against very challenging opponents.
Carroll Goal Keeper Jake Gehl played all 60 minutes between the pipes, saving 11 shots and seceding the defeat. His counterpart, Lance Guttormson, made 14 saves for Hanover, while also playing the entire game.
The Pioneers will look to right the ship from the friendly confines of Schneider Stadium on Saturday, March 22, where they will host Northland College. That game will begin at 4 p.m..
