WHEATON, Ill. – Carroll's men's tennis team opened conference play Saturday against Wheaton (Ill.), which is the team that ended the Pios' season in last year's CCIW Tournament quarterfinals. In Saturday's tightly contested match, Wheaton would defeat the Pioneers by a score of 4-3.
In doubles play, Carroll's lone victors were their number two doubles team of
Felix Persson and
Andrew LaBelle, whom won 6-4 against Wheaton's David Hill and Evan Walther. Wheaton would win the other two doubles matches to take the team point.
In singles play, the Pioneers surged, but it was not enough. Carroll produced three winners at one, three, and five singles.
Adrian Gomez battled at one, defeating Tim Steiner 6-2, 5-7, 10-8 in super tiebreak.
Andrew LaBelle battled at three singles, winning in three sets 6-1, 4-6, 6-2. Finally, Senior
Mark Trinka won 6-3, 6-4.
Carroll falls to 8-4 (0-1 CCIW) on the season. They will back in action Friday, March 28 against North Central (Ill.).
