Pios Fall To UW-La Crosse

WAUKESHA, Wis. - Carroll's women's lacrosse team lost to UW-La Crosse Saturday afternoon by a score of 11-7. That marks Carroll's first loss in the series, after defeating hte Eagles in their first four meetings. Despite the loss, Carroll held the advantage in both shots (25-20) and shots on goal (18-15), while forcing 23 turnovers.

The Pioneers (6-2) got off to a good start, scoring the game's first two goals, the first of which came from Elaina Phaneuf and the second on freshman Abby Tubbs' 13th goal of the season. UW-La Crosse (4-2) then got on the board on Ava Schiltz's 21st goal of the season, before Phaneuf added her second score of the game to give Carroll a 3-1 lead. UW-La Crosse then got goals from Angie Olla and Evie Brilz in the final minutes of the opening quarter to tie the game at three, before taking their first lead of the afternoon on a goal by Schiltz with just four seconds remaining in the quarter.

Carroll's leading scorer Elizabeth Wang then got into the action in the opening minute of the second quarter, scoring her 29th goal of the year to tie the score at four. That tie lasted less than a minute, as Megan Feeney gave UW-La Crosse the lead once more on her eighth goal of the season. Carroll continued to battle, tying the score at five mid-way through the second on a Sierra Skack goal, before Grace Brockman gave the Pios a 6-5 halftime lead with her ninth goal of the year in the final minutes of the half.

Schiltz, Brilz, and Olla each scored again to open the second half, giving UW-La Crosse an 8-6 advantage, before Brockman scored again to cut that lead to one with just under nine minutes remaining in the third quarter. That would be the Pios' final goal of the day however, as Schiltz scored twice more and Brilz added an insurance goal in the fourth for the Eagles.

Brockman and Phaneuf led Carroll with two goals apiece, while Brockman also finished with a pair of assists. Devon Duym and Hannah McKenna combined to make five saves at Goal Keeper for the Pios.

Schiltz led UW-La Crosse with five goals, while Brilz also completed a hat trick with three scores. Olla added two goals, while Schiltz also led the Eagles with two assists. Eagles Goal Keeper Stefania Rossi played all 60 minutes, saving 11 shots.

Carroll will try to rebound next weekend when they'll travel to former conference-foe University of Chicago. That game will begin Saturday at 1 p.m. in Chicago, Ill.
