WAUKESHA, Wis. - Carroll's softball team battled 18th-ranked UW-Whitewater in a doubleheader Thursday afternoon, with the Warhawks taking both games by scores of 8-0 and 10-3, respectively.
GAME ONE
The Pioneers' bats were quiet in the first game of the day, as
Gianna Buske broke up a no-hitter with two outs in the fifth, before
Abby Curtis followed that with a single of her own.
UW-Whitewater (14-0) scored on RBI singles in the first and third, before adding two more in the fourth and ending the game with a grand slam to left field by Grace Wickman in the sixth.
Carroll (7-7) used all four of their pitchers, with all but one run coming unearned.
Mya Schneider was solid in relief, pitching one hitless inning, while recording one strikeout.
GAME TWO
The day's second game began with three Whitewater runs in the top of the fourth. Carroll would get one back in the bottom of that inning on an RBI single by
Jenna Andler, which allowed Curtis to score.
Whitewater added a solo home run in the second, but the Pioneers closed the gap with two runs in the bottom of that frame, scoring both runs on a single off the bat of Buske to cut UWW's lead to 4-3.
Whitewater then broke the game wide open in the third on the team's second grand slam of the day, this one courtesy of Claire Kohnle. Wickman would cap the scoring with a two-run double in the sixth.
Carroll finished the game with five hits from five different players. Schneider again pitched well in relief, allowing just two hits in two scoreless innings.
The Pios are scheduled to be in action again Saturday for a home doubleheader against Beloit. Those games will begin at Noon at Kilgour Field in Waukesha, Wis.
