Abby Curtis Breaks Carroll's Career Steals Record In Doubleheader Sweep of Beloit

WAUKESHA, Wis. - Carroll's softball team swept Beloit College Saturday afternoon, tossing a pair of shutouts, while allowing just five hits combined, on a day where history was made. With two steals in the first inning of today's first game, Junior Outfielder Abby Curtis recorded the 49th stolen base of her career, surpassing the previous record of 48, which was set 13 years ago.

GAME ONE
Senior Riley Pavelka (5-3) all but eliminated the Beloit bats in the first game, allowing just three hits (all singles), while striking out six in the complete game shutout.

Offensively, Carroll (9-7) played small ball early to get on the board, scoring the game's first run via a walk to curtis, who promptly stole the next two bases to break the school's career record for steals, then scored on a two-run single by Kali Stanchina to break a scoreless tie. The Pios added another run in the third when Gianna Buske scored on a ground-out, before breaking the game open with a four-run fifth, highlighted by a three-run homer by Addison Leck, which followed a sac fly off the bat of Morgan Miller. Carroll would end the game in six innings on a sac fly from MK Dusza, which allowed Curtis to score.

The Pioneers finished with nine hits in the game, with two apiece coming from Buske, Stanchina, and Leck. Buske also scored a game-high three runs.

GAME TWO
Beloit's bats were even more silent in the nightcap, as Makayla Wall fired a two-hit complete game shutout, which saw Beloit reach base on the first batter of the game and with two outs in the final inning. Wall also recorded five punch-outs.

The game's only run came in the first, when Curtis scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Dusza.

Carroll finished with six hits, all singles. Allison Garski led the way with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate, while Kiana Johnson recorded two base knocks and Stanchina registered the other.

The Pioneers will try to keep their momentum going Tuesday as they'll open their conference season at home against Wheaton (Ill.). That doubleheader will begin at Kilgour Field in Waukesha, Wis., with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.
