WAUKESHA, Wis. - Carroll's women's lacrosse team remained undefeated (5-0) on the season Sunday afternoon with an 11-9 win over UW-River Falls, handing the Falcons thier first loss of the season. The two teams played evenly for much of the game, with River Falls holding a 22-21 shot advantage.
The Pioneers started the game on fire, building a 4-1 lead after one quarter of play, as
Rebecca Hallman,
Lauren Fricke,
Elizabeth Wang, and
Abby Tubbs all scored for the Pios. UW-River Falls (2-1) would close the gap in the second period thanks to goals from Molly Pierce and Murphi Specht, but Carroll answered with a pair of goals of their own, coming from
Samantha Hurd and
Abby Tubbs. River Falls Samantha Hayek would add a goal in the final seconds of the first half to cut Carroll's lead to 6-4 at the half.
Elaina Phaneuf's third goal of the season would give Carroll a three-goal advantage in the opening minutes of the third quarter, before UW-River Falls scored a trio of goals during the next eight minutes to tie the score at seven. Wang would answer with her second goal of the game to give the Pios the lead once again, followed by
Lauren Fricke's 11th goal of the year, sending Carroll into the fourth leading 9-7.
Abby Tubbs and
Rebecca Hallman would each score for the Pios in the final quarter for some much needed insurance, as Carroll held on for the two-goal victory.
Tubbs led Carroll with three goals for her first career hat trick, while Hallman, Fricke, and Wang each scored twice.
Grace Brockman led all players with four assists.
Devon Duym and
Hannah McKenna each played one half at Goal Keeper for the Pios, with McKenna earning the win with a six-save performance.
Samantha Hayek led UW-River Falls with three goals, while Brooke Glumack added two, in addition to a team-high three assists. Isabel Orton played the entire game in goal for the Falcons, making two saves.
The Pioneers will be in action again on Thursday when they'll travel to Georgetown, Texas to battle Meredith College at 11 a.m.
