NEW BERLIN, Wis. – Despite strong start, Carroll's men's tennis team lost a conference dual match to Augustana Friday night by a score of 5-2.
In doubles play, the Pioneers came out strong, winning two of the three matches. At the top flight,
Daniel Ezcurra and
Adrian Gomez showed dominance, winning 6-1. The number two doubles team of
Andrew LaBelle and
Mark Trinka also came in clutch, winning 6-4 to earn the doubles point.
Carroll would struggle in singles play, winning just one of the six matches. Gomez defeated Gabriel Luna 6-3, 6-0 at the number two flight. Ezcurra battled at the number one flight, but ultimately lost to last year's CCIW Student-Athlete of the Year, Arthur Hermange, 7-6(4), 6-2, 2-6.
Andrew LaBelle also fell in a battle at the third position, losing 1-6, 6-4, 1-6. At number six singles, Trinka fell in a close match, which ended in a super tiebreak, 7-5, 2-6, 4-10.
The Pios fall to 8-7 (0-3 CCIW) on the season. They will be back in action on April 11 at Millikin. That match will begin at 10 a.m. in Decatur, Ill., with the Pios traveling to Bloomington, Ill. after that match to battle Illinois Wesleyan at 4 p.m. that afternoon.
