Box Score 2 Carroll's men's tennis team won both of their matches this weekend to improve their season record to 10-7 (2-3 CCIW). The Pios' wins came against a pair of conference foes, defeating Illinois Wesleyan 6-1 on Friday afternoon, before also winning against Millikin on Saturday by a score of 4-3.
In Friday's match, the Pioneers kicked their weekend off with a 6-1 victory against Illinois Wesleyan. In doubles play, Carroll won two of the three matches, with
Adrian Gomez and
Daniel Ezcurra winning 6-4 at the top flight.
Jack McCaffery and
Ryan LaBelle defeated the Titans 6-1 as the Pios' number three doubles team.
Carroll continued to shine in singles play, winning five of their six matches against the Titans. Ezcurra dropped his first set at number one singles, 2-6, but came back to win the next two sets, 6-4, 6-2. Gomez kept the winning going at the number two flight, defeating Ben Vigneri 6-2, 6-0. McCaffrey swiftly won at number four singles 6-3, 6-0, while
Ryan LaBelle mimicked McCaffery, winning 6-3 6-0. Finally,
David Eman defeated Chase Tomecki 6-4, 6-0 at the number six position to claim victory for the Pioneers.
Saturday, the Pioneers traveled to Decatur to take on Millikin's Big Blue. Carroll came out slow in doubles play, only winning one of the three matches.
Mark Trinka and McCaffrey won 6-0 against Millikin's number three doubles team.
In singles play, the Pioneers responded in a big way. Eman got things started at the number six flight, winning dominantly 6-0, 6-1. Gomez then continued his win streak, defeating Theo Wolf 6-4, 2-6, 6-0 at the top flight. With the Pioneers down 2-3 and needing two massive wins to clinch the conference match, Trinka stepped up in a big way, defeating Millikin 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 to get the victory at the number five position. Ezcurra then turned up the heat at the second flight, defeating Millikin's Clayton Maack in a thriller 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (8-6).
Carroll will be in action again on Thursday, when they'll travel to Carthage College. That match will begin at 3 p.m. in Kenosha, Wis.
