Pioneers Battle to 1-1 Draw Behind Nowak’s Early Strike

FOND DU LAC, Wis. – Carroll University women's soccer earned a hard-fought 1-1 draw on the road against Marian University on Saturday afternoon at Smith Field, powered by a composed early finish from senior midfielder Carmella Nowak.

The Pioneers (1-1-3) wasted no time asserting themselves, striking just over three minutes into the match. After drawing a foul in the box, Nowak calmly converted the penalty kick to give Carroll a 1-0 lead. It was her third goal of the season and a testament to her leadership and poise in the midfield.

Carroll controlled much of the first half, outshooting the Sabres 5-1 and forcing two saves from the Marian goalkeeper. Addie Decker and Gabby Courtois each tested the keeper with shots on target, while the Pioneers' back line, anchored by Victoria Crivello and Alexa Karagiannis, held firm to preserve the lead into halftime.

In the second half, Carroll continued to create chances, including a blocked shot from Brielle Ingalsbee and another effort from Nowak that was saved. Freshman Naomy Gonzalez also made her presence felt with two shots.

Goalkeeper Ava Lewandowski was steady in net, recording three saves, including a key stop in the 78th minute to keep the match level. Despite Marian equalizing in the 59th minute on a long-range strike, the Pioneers remained composed and nearly found a winner late through sustained pressure and a late corner kick.

Carroll finished with an 8-7 edge in total shots and matched Marian with four shots on goal. The Pioneers also showed discipline and organization, committing fewer fouls and drawing four offsides on the Sabres.

The draw marks Carroll's third tie of the season and reflects a team continuing to grow in confidence and cohesion. The Pioneers return to action on Monday as they travel to Beloit for another non-conference tilt at 4:30pm.
