WAUKESHA, Wis. – Carroll University succeeded in non-conference play with a strong 3-1 victory over MSOE on Tuesday night at Van Male Fieldhouse, winning by scores of 25-19, 25-7, 24-26, and 25-14. The Pioneers improved to 9-8 overall, while the Raiders fell to 3-12.
Carroll came out sharp in the opening set, hitting .297 as a team and using a balanced attack to secure a 25-19 win. The Pioneers dominated the second frame, limiting MSOE to a -.231 hitting percentage while rolling to a 25-7 decision behind aggressive serving and stout defense at the net.
After intermission, MSOE battled back in a tightly contested third set. The Raiders capitalized on Carroll errors and timely kills to edge the Pioneers 26-24, forcing a fourth set. Carroll quickly regained control, racing to an early lead and closing out the match 25-14 with efficient offense and strong blocking.
Carroll finished the night hitting .190 with 60 kills, led by Audrey Rosenbaum's 15.5 points and 15 kills on 32 swings. Brooklyn Johnson added 11 kills at a .636 clip, while Kylie Wittnebel chipped in 11.5 points and four blocks. Setter Payton Depies directed the offense with 30 assists and contributed four blocks defensively. The Pioneers' front line totaled eight team blocks and held MSOE to a .008 hitting percentage.
Defensively, Carroll posted 59 digs, paced by libero Maggie McGough with 18. The Pioneers also served tough, recording 10 aces against just six errors, highlighted by Rosenbaum and Wittnebel's combined pressure from the line.
Carroll returns to action this Friday in CCIW play, as they travel to Rock Island, Ill. to take on Augustana, looking to build on this strong match.
