WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Carroll softball team earned a split on Monday in Florida, picking up an 8–5 victory in the opener against Thomas (Maine) before falling 6–4 to Saint Joseph's (Maine) in the second game of the day.
Carroll jumped out quickly in game one, scoring three runs in the first inning to take early control. The Pioneers continued to apply pressure throughout the contest, finishing with eight runs on nine hits while drawing nine walks. Abigail Curtis led the offense with a strong performance at the plate, collecting three hits, three runs scored, and two RBI, while Mary Dusza and Valerie Osthoff each added key extra-base hits. Carroll pulled away with a decisive four-run fifth inning, turning a tight game into a multi-run advantage.
In the circle, Carroll used a combination of arms to hold Thomas to just two hits, with Makayla Wall closing the game and earning the win after a steady relief outing.
In game two, Carroll battled throughout but came up just short in a 6–4 loss to Saint Joseph's. The Pioneers chipped away after an early deficit, scoring in four consecutive innings to pull even at 4–4 through five frames. Emma Smith and Madison Hoagland each drove in runs during the comeback effort, while Makayla Grantz went 3-for-3 at the plate and scored twice.
Saint Joseph's pushed across two unearned runs in the sixth inning to regain the lead, and Carroll was unable to mount a final rally in the seventh.
Carroll finished the day with consistent production at the plate and continued to show resilience across both contests as the Pioneers move forward with their spring schedule, which sees them with another doubleheader Thursday versus Beloit and Albertus Magnus in Winter Haven once again.
