WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Carroll softball team battled through two tightly contested games on Thursday at the Spring Games in Winter Haven, Florida, falling 5–4 to Husson in the opener before a 4–2 loss to Wittenberg in the second game of the day.
In the first game against Husson, Carroll jumped out to an early advantage with two runs in the opening inning. MK Dusza delivered an RBI single to put the Pioneers on the board, and Grace O'Connor followed with a sacrifice fly to give Carroll a 2–0 lead.
Husson responded with a pair of multi-run innings, but Carroll continued to chip away. The Pioneers pulled within two in the fifth inning when Jennavieve Andler advanced home on a throwing error, and Carroll made it a one-run game in the seventh as MK Dusza reached on an error, allowing Gianna Buske to score.
Carroll had the tying run on base late, but Husson was able to close out the one-run decision.
In the nightcap against Wittenberg, Carroll again found itself in a close battle. After Wittenberg built a 3–0 lead, the Pioneers answered in the fourth inning. MK Dusza sparked the rally with a single, followed by an RBI double from Andler and an RBI triple by Madison Hoagland to pull Carroll within one.
Carroll's pitching staff settled in after the early innings, as Makayla Grantz and Makayla Wall combined to limit Wittenberg's offense over the middle frames. Wittenberg added an insurance run in the seventh, and Carroll threatened in its final at-bat but was unable to complete the comeback.
Despite the results, Carroll remained competitive throughout the day, playing two close games against strong opponents as the Pioneers continued their spring schedule in Florida.
