WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — The Carroll softball team posted a split on Saturday at the Spring Games, defeating Ohio Wesleyan 7–5 before dropping a 7–1 decision to Bowdoin College.
In the opener against Ohio Wesleyan, Carroll jumped out quickly and built an early cushion. The Pioneers scored three runs in the first inning and added three more in the second, using aggressive baserunning and timely hitting to seize control of the game.
Emma Smith opened the scoring with an RBI double, and Jennavieve Andler followed with a two-run single to cap the first-inning rally. Carroll continued to apply pressure in the second, as Grace O'Connor delivered a two-run double before Andler added her third RBI of the game with another base hit.
Carroll added an insurance run in the third inning and held off Ohio Wesleyan's late push behind a strong pitching effort. Makayla Grantz earned the win in relief, while Julia Hupp closed out the contest to secure the victory. Andler finished with three RBI, while O'Connor and Smith each recorded multi-hit performances.
In the second game against Bowdoin, Carroll struck first in the second inning. Kali Stanchina worked a bases-loaded walk to bring home Jennavieve Andler for the game's opening run.
Bowdoin responded with a big fourth inning, scoring five runs to take control. Carroll continued to battle, putting runners on base in multiple innings, including hits from Gianna Buske and Grace O'Connor, but was unable to generate another scoring rally.
Carroll's pitching staff worked through traffic throughout the contest, with Mya Schneider and Makayla Wall combining in the circle as the Pioneers fought to keep the game within reach.
Carroll concludes play at the Spring Games as the Pioneers gained valuable experience as well as games against a wide variety of challenging competitions. They now have some time off as they will play at Beloit on March 28th for a doubleheader.
