WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Carroll softball team split a Sunday doubleheader in Winter Haven, Florida, earning a 1–0 shutout victory over Penn State Behrend before dropping an 11–7 decision to Washington College.
Game 1: Carroll 1, Penn State Behrend 0
Carroll earned the opening win behind a dominant pitching performance and timely offense in the seventh inning. After six scoreless frames, the Pioneers pushed across the game's lone run in the top of the seventh.
Madison Hoagland reached base and later scored on a single by Gianna Buske, giving Carroll the 1–0 lead. The run proved to be enough as the Pioneer pitching staff closed out the shutout in the bottom half of the inning.
Mya Schneider started in the circle and allowed four hits over four scoreless innings. Makayla Wall earned the win in relief, tossing three shutout innings while striking out four and allowing just one hit to improve to 3–0 on the season.
Carroll was limited to three hits in the game, with Buske driving in the decisive run.
Game 2: Washington College 11, Carroll 7
In the second game, Carroll showed resilience after falling behind early, battling back to take a brief lead before Washington College pulled away late.
Washington scored five runs over the first two innings, but Carroll responded with a four-run third inning to tie the game at 6–6. Kali Stanchina delivered a two-run single during the rally, while Makayla Grantz added an RBI double to highlight the inning.
The Pioneers finished with 13 hits in the contest. Stanchina went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in, while Auli'i Chong and Valerie Osthoff each collected multiple hits. Grantz also drove in a run and added a double at the plate.
Washington College regained the lead in the fifth and added insurance runs in the sixth and seventh innings to secure the win.
Carroll concludes the day with a split, continuing its early-season stretch in Florida as the Pioneers look to build momentum moving forward. Their next matchups come Tuesday when they take on Thomas College and St. Joseph's College of Maine.
