WAUKESHA, Wis. — The Carroll University softball team battled through two competitive games on Sunday afternoon but came up short in both ends of the doubleheader against Augustana at Kilgour Field, falling 4–2 in the opener and 9–0 in game two on a day where the Pioneers honored their seniors.
Game 1 – Augustana 4, Carroll 2
The opener was a tightly contested matchup, with Carroll matching Augustana early and keeping the game within reach throughout.
Augustana scored an unearned run in the first inning, but Carroll responded immediately as Abigail Curtis crossed the plate on a fielder's choice to tie the game at 1–1. The Vikings regained the lead in the fifth and added insurance in the sixth to go up 4–1.
Carroll mounted a late push in the seventh inning. With runners on, Makayla Grantz delivered an RBI single to center field, scoring Curtis and cutting the deficit to two. The rally, however, was halted as Augustana closed out the game.
Curtis finished 3-for-4 in the opener, while Gianna Buske added two hits. Kali Stanchina also recorded multiple hits as Carroll totaled 10 hits in the game.
In the circle, Mya Schneider worked 5.2 innings, allowing four runs (three earned), while Madelyn Eckl threw 1.1 scoreless innings in relief.
Game 2 – Augustana 9, Carroll 0
Augustana took control early in the nightcap, scoring in four different innings and pulling away with a five-run fifth and a three-run seventh.
Carroll was limited to four hits in game two, with singles from Abigail Curtis, Gianna Buske, Makayla Grantz, and Kali Stanchina. The Pioneers drew four walks but were unable to generate a sustained rally against the Augustana pitching staff.
In the circle, Carroll used multiple pitchers as Augustana's offense built its lead.
Carroll moved to 16–15 overall and 3–5 in CCIW play following the doubleheader as the Pioneers continue conference competition. Their next games come Tuesday when they return home to face North Central in a doubleheader starting at 1pm.
