WAUKESHA, Wis. – This week's Pios of the Week for the week ending 4/5 are Samantha Sciortino of Women's Bowling and Joey Appino of Men's Baseball for their standout performances during a historic week for both programs.
Senior outfielder Joey Appino, from Loves Park, IL, delivered a clutch, record-setting week for Carroll baseball, playing a key role in the Pioneers' weekend series win over Illinois Wesleyan.
Appino went 7-for-13 at the plate with six RBIs and four runs scored, highlighted by a go-ahead three-run home run in the final game of the series that swung momentum and helped secure the weekend victory. He added a double during the series that made him the all-time doubles leader in Carroll baseball history, further cementing his place in the program's record book.
In addition to his production at the plate, Appino added two stolen bases, consistently putting pressure on opposing defenses and creating opportunities throughout the lineup. A senior leader, his ability to deliver in key moments and impact the game in multiple ways helped fuel Carroll's success during a crucial stretch of conference play.
Sophomore Samantha Sciortino, from Mundelein, IL, stepped up in a major way for Carroll women's bowling during the NCAA Tournament, anchoring the lineup and delivering clutch shots during the most successful postseason runs in program history.
Competing in her first NCAA Tournament, Sciortino embraced the responsibility of the anchor position and consistently executed in high-pressure situations as the Pioneers earned their first NCAA Tournament win in program history with a victory over Fayetteville State.
Carroll followed that milestone win by facing top-seeded Jacksonville State before pushing reigning national champion Youngstown State to a best-of-seven tiebreaker set in the double-elimination round. Sciortino's poise and confidence late in Baker games helped Carroll compete toe-to-toe with some of the nation's top programs on the national stage.
Her performance highlighted Carroll's growth as a program and underscored Sciortino's importance as a steady, reliable presence in the lineup during critical moments.
