Box Score (Waukesha, Wis.) – In arguably the game of the year in Midwest Conference women's basketball, Carroll University came up just short against Cornell College, the defending league champions. The Rams outlasted the Pioneers 92-90 in double-overtime.
The loss snaps Carroll's three-game winning streak and drops them to 13-7 overall, 10-5 in the MWC while Cornell improves to 16-3 overall, 12-2 in league play and continues to share the league's top spot with St. Norbert College.
Carroll and Cornell traded jabs in the first half but it was the Pioneers that held a 29-25 lead at halftime. The two teams continued to share the lead in the second half until the Rams seemingly took control of the game with nine-point leads on several occasions, the last at the 9:40 mark.
The feisty Pioneers showed championship grit and clawed their way back, tying the score at 54-54 with 5:04 to play. Carroll then took control down the stretch and was the odds-on favorite for the victory in regulation with a lead as much as five points in the closing moments.
Carroll then held a 69-66 lead with 12 seconds remaining but Cornell's Rikki Mulloy drained a game-tying three-pointer with five seconds remaining to force overtime.
It was Cornell that had the upper hand in the first overtime. The Rams jumped out to a six-point lead but Carroll once again battled back and eventually forced a second overtime on a layup from Corrine Engels with 18 seconds remaining.
The second overtime started with Carroll dominating. The Pioneers held an 88-83 lead with 3:14 to play. This time it was the Rams mounting the comeback, outscoring Carroll 9-2 the rest of the way to earn the victory.
Emily DeNoyer led Carroll with 25 points while Engels added 18. Brianna Johnson and Malory Christenson chipped in with 12 and 11 points, respectively. DeNoyer's 25 points pushed her career scoring total to 968, increasing her chances of reaching the 1,000-point plateau.
