Waukesha, Wis --The Carroll University women's basketball team begins their 2019-20 season on Saturday, November 9, against the No. 19 University of Wisconsin - La Crosse at 7 PM in Waukesha, Wis. at Van Male Field House.

The Pioneers will see a larger roster this year, with 16 athletes compared to 12 a year ago. Seven Pioneers will return to the team, including two juniors and five sophomores. Junior Emily Majerus (Plymouth, Wis., Plymouth) started 21 out of 24 games played last season and led the team in minutes played. Majerus averaged 6.5 points per game, including 13 points against Illinois Wesleyan on 2/16/19. Majerus also averaged 2.9 rebounds per game, and 3.3 assists per game. Junior Hailey Herriges (Kewaskum, Wis., Kewaskum) returns this season after suffering an injury to end her season after playing in nine games. She averaged 13 minutes per game before her injury. Of the five sophomores returning, Sierra Grubor (Milwaukee, Wis., Whitnall) looks to build off her great freshman season a year ago. Grubor led the team in scoring, averaging 14.0 points per game through 22 contests, while shooting 41.2% from the field and 30.3% from behind the arc. Sophomore Alyssa Cruz (West Allis, Wis., Nathan Hale) will contribute as well after averaging 10-6-4 (Pts.-Ast-Reb) last season. The Pioneers welcome in nine newcomers this season, with seven new freshmen and two sophomores.

The Pioneers face a similar challenge to last season, no senior leadership. The Pioneers averaged 63.9 points per game with only freshmen and sophomores on the squad. However, the four leading scorers from a year ago will lead the Pioneers this season, including sophomores Sierra Grubor (14 pts/gm), Alyssa Cruz (10.3 pts/gm), Theresa Wichser (Waukesha, Wis., Brookfield Academy) (9.4 pts/gm), and Kayla Stefka (Johnsburg, Ill., Johnsburg) (8.7 pts/gm). Cruz added in 5.8 ast/gm and 2 steals/gm, and Stefka grabbed 4.4 reb/gm from a season ago.

The Pioneers were picked to finish 9th in the CCIW this season after finishing in 8th place a season ago. They will open conference play on Dec 4 against North Park at home and will wrap up the regular season in Van Male against Millikin on Feb 22. The best time to watch the women's CCIW action is the month of January, when they play 4 out of 7 CCIW games at home. Grubor was named second team all-conference a year ago.

Head Coach Lindsay Schultz will enter her fourth season as head coach, with a record of 18-56 (10-38 CCIW). Schultz adds a new assistant this season, Jessi Spaight. Spaight spent her last four years at Lakeland University, where she graduated with a degree in Marketing and Business Administration. Returning for the Pioneers this season is Dave Borowicz, Paul Darling, and Brittany Skarlupka.
