SEWANEE, Tenn.- Carroll University opened up the 2019 season dropping a pair of non-conference games to Sewanee (6-1, 0-0 SAA) on Sunday afternoon.
Game one started off well as Mathew Putman recorded the first hit of the 2019 season with a deep double to left-center. Dylan Callahan would follow with a sharp line-drive single to put runners at the corners with one out. A perfectly executed double-steal would plate Putman to give the Pios a 1-0 lead.
Carroll would plate four more runs, all with two out, in the second inning. Putman again had the big hit driving in a pair with the bases loaded to give Carroll the 5-0 lead.
Sewanee would chip away with a run in the bottom of the second, two in the fourth and one in the sixth to cut the Pioneers' lead to 5-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh.
The Tigers would pull in front in the seventh with a three-spot and hang on to win the opener 7-5.
Cameron Godinsky would start and work six strong innings, taking the no-decision in his first start of 2019.
Putman would finish the game 3x5 with a pair of doubles, two runs scored and two RBI.
Carroll would dig themselves and early hole in game two as they found themselves down 13-0 after two innings on 11 hits.
The Pios would settle in and put a four-spot on the board in the top of the third, but the deficit would prove too difficult to overcome as they would fall 15-5 in game two.
Despite the difficulties of playing your season opener in windy conditions on your first opportunity to get outside for the season, there were many silver linings on the day. Four freshman pitchers made their combined debut and didn't surrender a run, hit or walk on the day. Freshman position players also enjoyed stellar debuts as four players received their first collegiate starts on the day.
Carroll will wrap up the three game series in Tennessee with a 10am game at Sewannee on Monday morning.
