11/13/2021 8:00:00 AM

WAUKESHA, Wis. – The Carroll University football team will play in its 1,000th career game in program history on Saturday, November 13 at Elmhurst University. The Pioneer football team has been a cornerstone of Carroll University, all the way back to its inception. Below are 100 historic events in Carroll history to celebrate the milestone game.
The First Year of the Program: In 1894, President Walter Rankin introduced intercollegiate athletics to the campus of Carroll College. The football program was started the same year, playing in three games.
Carroll football's first win: The Pioneers picked up their first career win against Marquette in 1895. Carroll won 8-6.
First defensive shutout: Carroll's defensive efforts was on display the first time they held an opponent to 0 points, defeating Milwaukee East Side High School, 4-0 in 1896.
First Winning Season: In 1896, Carroll finished 5-3-2 after 10 games, grabbing its first winning season ever, just two years after starting the program.
The first forward pass: On September 5, 1905, the Pioneers were facing off against St. Louis University. With the score tied in the second half at 0-0, St. Louis became the first team in football history to throw a forward pass. The pass fell incomplete, but the next attempt was caught for a gain of 22 yards. Up until 1905, football was built around brutally tough runs. The rule was put in place with an effort to provide safety to players. Carroll fell in the game 22-0, but the record will always show the first ever forward pass was thrown in Waukesha, Wisconsin.
First Undefeated Season: In 1909, the Pioneers scheduled six games, and won all six games to finish unbeaten for the first time in program history. The Pioneers allowed just total 23 points to their opponents all season, while averaging 23.3 offensive points per game. Carroll defeated Whitewater Normal School (now UW-Whitewater) 68-0, tied for their largest win at the time in program history. The Pioneers would only have four more perfect seasons in their program history.
Team Restarts: The Pioneers finished the 1916 season 2-3-2 and did not return to play in 1917. At the peak of World War I, the Pioneers didn't field a program. It wasn't until 1918 that Coach Fries started up the team again, playing just three games that season.
Carroll gets win #100: The Pioneers picked up win no. 100 in the 1927 season, just 33 seasons old. Carroll defeated Chicago YMCA College by a score of 27-6. The Pios went 6-1-1 that season under the helm of coach Armstrong.
Team Restarts…Again: In 1942, after a 5-1-1 season, the Pioneers hung up their cleats for the second time in program history. Carroll did not field a team in the 1943 and 1944 seasons, likely due to World War II. The Pioneers started back up again in 1945, finishing with a 1-3 record.
The First All-American: The Pioneers have had 23 individuals earn at least one All-American designations in program history. The earliest record of an All-American Pioneer dates to Alvin Hanke's 1946 All-American title as a freshman halfback. Hanke would go on to be named an All-American two more times in his career.
Joining the CCIW: The Pioneers joined the prestigious, College Conference of Illinois in 1956, becoming the conference's eighth member. In the first season, Carroll finished 5-2-0, good for a third-place finish in the conference that started in 1946. The CCI would later change its name to the CCIW, to accommodate for Carroll and Carthage colleges' memberships.
First Conference Win: Carroll defeated Illinois Wesleyan in 1956, claiming its first win in the CCIW. This was the Pioneers' third game of the 1956 season, and its second CCIW game.
First Win against Augustana: Carroll defeated Augustana in 1956 for its first win against the Vikings in program history by a score of 19-12. This was the second ever meeting between the two programs, with the first game played back in 1948, with Augie winning 12-7 over Carroll.
First win over Carthage: The Pios met Carthage for the first time in 1961. The established CCIW Pioneers defeated the Redmen 19-6. Carroll would go on to build a rivalry with Carthage, establishing the Old Musket game in 1964.
First Win over Elmhurst: Carroll came out firing its first year in the CCIW, defeating five of seven conference opponents, including a beatdown of Elmhurst by a score of 34-0 in 1956. The Pioneers would go on to shutout Elmhurst four seasons in a row and won 13 of the first 15 meetings.
First Win Over Illinois Wesleyan: Before the Pios and the Titans faced off in the first CCIW win for Carroll, the two teams met years before. Carroll and Illinois Wesleyan University first squared off in 1933. Carroll came out with a 12-7 win in the non-conference battle.
First Win Over Millikin: Carroll and the Big Blue met in 1942 for the first time. In a close, defensive battle, the Pioneers fell in the first meeting, 0-3. Six years later, Carroll came back and stomped Millikin 20-0 in 1948, securing its first win against the opponent that would soon become a conference foe.
First Win over North Central: Carroll started playing the Cardinals of North Central back in 1936. Carroll started out strong, winning 10 of the first 11 games against the Cardinals, and they shut North Central out the first four games in program history.
First Win over North Park: Carroll holds the best winning percentage against North Park than any other CCIW program. Carroll and North Park first matched up in the year 1960 in a non-conference game. Carroll came away with a 33-0 victory. Carroll won its first 11 straight games against North Park, and 16 of the first 18.
First Win Over Wheaton: Carroll and Wheaton have gotten in their share of winning and losing streaks over the years, but it was Carroll who first got the upper hand when they defeated the Thunder 39-13 in 1937. Carroll won five straight from 1937-1941, all in non-conference matches.
Largest Win in Program History: in 1957, Carroll and Elmhurst met for just the second time ever. The Pioneers trounced the Bluejays, 71-0 for the largest margin of victory in the program's 63-year history. Other scores have come close, but no other Pioneer group has beaten a team by 71 points.
Anschuetz leads the NAIA: Dave "Shooter" Anschuetz led the Pioneers and the NAIA in passing yards in 1972. Shooter is second all-time in passing yards in a season with 2,321, and ranks in the top-ten in career yards passing as a Pioneer.
First Old Musket Win: The history of the Old Musket trophy dates back to 1964, when fraternaties on the campuses of Carroll College and Carthage College designed a musket trophy donated by a Carthage faculty member. The Old Musket game still continues to this day. The Pioneers wouldn't go on to hold the musket until the 1975 season, as they snapped a 12-game losing streak to Carthage.
Bob Helf Signs with Green Bay Packers: Wide receiver Bob Helf signed with the Green Bay Packers after his spectacular Carroll football career. Helf finished with 2,753 receiving yards, while leading the NAIA three times. Helf was a two-time All-American, including a unanimous selection in 1974 by three ranking bodies.
Joined the NCAA: The Pioneers became an NCAA Division III football member in the year 1976. Lots of great things happened for the Pioneers in 1976.
First CCIW Conference Championship (1976): 20 years after joining the conference, Carroll finished 7-0-1 for its first conference title in program history. Carroll's defense allowed just 11.5 points per game that season, while averaging 33.5 points per game. Carroll's only non-regular season was a 7-7 tie at North Central.
First NCAA Tournament Appearance (1976): In the first year in Division III, the Pios found a spot in the 1976 NCAA Championship Tournament. Only eight teams qualified back then, and Carroll and Augustana were both representing the CCIW. The Pioneers hosted Buena Vista College in the first round. The Pioneers fell in a close, overtime game, by a score of 14-20. Carroll has not qualified for the NCAA tournament since this game.
Most Interceptions in a Season: The Pios became the ball-hawks during their 1976 championship run. Carroll intercepted a whopping 27 passes in their 10-game season, good for just under 3 a game.
Pete Thompson's 20 catch game: Pete Thompson holds the Carroll record for 20 catches in a single game, set back on November 4, 1978 against Augustana. Only Kevin Jennings' 16 catch game has gotten the closest to Thompson's record. Thompson's 20 catches are tied for 12th most all-time in a single game in DIII history, and is the oldest record listed on the single-game receptions list.
John Paul Records Most Punting Yards in a Career: From 1976-1979, punter John Paul set the Carroll record for most punting yards in a career with 7,042. Paul took 190 punts in his career for an average of 37.06 Yards per punt. Jason Velicer tried to break the record 20 years later but was unsuccessful finishing 69 yards short of the title. Paul averaged 39.96 yards per punt in 1978.
Longest Punt: In 1984 against CCIW rival Illinois Wesleyan, Jim Furlong kicked Carroll's longest punt in recorded history, a whopping 74 yards. To put this in perspective, current Carroll punter Demetrios Brillakis' longest punt this season was 66 yards.
Chris Gustafson Knocks in Carroll's Longest Recorded Field Goal: In 1985, in a CCIW game against North Park, Chris Gustafson knocked a 59-yard field goal through the uprights. This kick still remains the longest field goal in Carroll history, and is just three yards shy of the NCAA DIII record long of 62.
Most Fumble Recoveries in a Season: In 1986, Carroll set a record in fumble recoveries with 23 total. The Pios recovered over half of the fumbles that fell to the ground that season.
Brian Erickson Sets All-Time Total Tackles Record: Many have tried, but none have been able to pass Brian Erickson's 291 total tackles all-time in Carroll history. Erickson set the record playing from 1984-1987.
Carroll Snaps Augie's Win Streak: On October 8, 1988, The Pioneers and Augustana matched up for the 34th time in program history. Augustana had won 70 straight games leading back to the 1980 season. The Pioneers didn't back down. Halfback Bill Nolan dove into the endzone for the one-yard score towards the end of the game, as Carroll went on to snap Augustana's streak, with a final score of 24-21. Carroll snapped their own nine-game losing streak to the Vikings as well.
Masonholder Earns CCIW Coach of the Year: After the 7-2 season, and after the second conference championship in program history, Merle Masonholder was announced as the 1988 CCIW Bob Reade Coach of the Year recipient. Masonholder was the first head coach on record in Carroll football history to receive this type of recognition.
Carroll Claims Second CCIW Championship (1988): After defeating arguably the best team in the country in Augustana, and finishing the CCIW season with a 7-1 record, the Pioneers were named CCIW Co-Conference Champions with Augustana in the 1988 season. This would be the last title Carroll would win before leaving the conference for the Midwest Conference in 1992.
Dave Weber Drafted to the NFL: Carroll QB Dave Weber was drafted by the Los Angeles Raiders in the 11th round of the 1988 NFL Draft. Weber would go on to eventually sign contracts with the Miami Dolphins and the Atlanta Falcons in his NFL career.
Pat Belson Records 10 Field Goals in a Season: Belson's 10 field goals in 1989 became the most ever made in a single Pioneer season. Jachimek came the closest in 2005, making nine, but the record hasn't been touched since.
Joined the Midwest Conference (1992): In 1992, the Pioneers set off on a new journey to the Midwest Athletic Conference. Carroll joined teams the likes of Beloit, St. Norbert, Lawrence, and more. Carroll would remain in the Midwest Conference for 24 seasons.
Best Total Defense in a Season: Defense wins games, and that was the case for the 1992 Pioneer team, who finished 8-1 that season with the best defense in the Midwest Conference. Carroll allowed just 2,159 yards of total offense all season. Carroll's defense gave up just an average of 209 yards per game total to their nine opponents.
Mike Sikma's Three Pick-Six Season: Mike Sikma and Andy Ostrand terrorized quarterbacks in 1992 and 1993. Sikma turned three interceptions that 1992 season into touchdowns, the most in a given season, passing Chad Girad's 1990 record of two.
Andy Ostrand Becomes First Pioneer with 20 Career Interceptions: In 1993, Andy Ostrand passed Dan Pokwinski with his Carroll leading 15th interception, but he wasn't done there. Ostrand went on to intercept five more passes to break the 20-interception barrier that no other Pioneer had accomplished. Ostrand finished his career with three more picks, to cement him in first place with 23.
Ostrand Goes Back-to-Back: After a super successful 1992 campaign for Andy Ostrand, coming away with the Carroll tied for season-high nine interceptions, Ostrand followed it up in 1993 with his second consecutive season with nine interceptions. Ostrand and Jack Miller hold the record for most interceptions in a single year with nine, but Ostrand is the only Pioneer to accomplish the feat twice.
Mike Sikma Tallies Three Career Punt Returns: Mike Sikma took three punts back to the house in his four-year career, including two in a single season in 1993. Sikma holds three of the 18 recorded punt returns in school history.
Dave Uelmen records 100 tackles in a season: In 1993, Dave Uelmen set the record for most tackles in a season with 108. Uelmen passed Don Hostetler's record number of 98, that was set back in 1988. Uelmen was the first ever Pioneer to record 100 tackles, and only two other Carroll defenders have ever hit 100 tackles. Mike Dziewit tied the record in 2011.
Most Passing TDs in a Season: The 1994 saw the most touchdowns through the air in any Carroll football season. 27 passes were caught for touchdowns in the nine-game season. RJ Hoppe caught 16 of the team's 27 for just over 1,000 yards receiving. Carroll finished first in the MWC with 245 yards passing per game as well.
Steve Harris Rushes for 3,000 Yards: Steve Harris became Carroll's first ever 3,000-yard rusher in the 1994 season. Harris finished his Carroll career after four seasons with 3,487 yards and 40 touchdowns. Only three other Carroll running backs have rushed for 3,000 yards after Harris.
Steve Harris' Single Season Rushing Record: To cap off his career and to establish the 3,000-yard club, Harris rushed for a Carroll record 1,438 yards in 1994. No other Pioneer has ever rushed for even 1,400 yards in a single season.
Chris Klippel Throws 25 Touchdowns in a Season: Chris Klippel leaped over Dave Webber's single season touchdown passing record in 1994. Klippel finished the season with 27 and became the first Pioneer to ever throw more than 25, or 20, in a season. Klippel finished first in MWC games with 19 passing touchdowns.
R.J Hoppe Breaks Pete Thompson's Touchdown Record: R.J Hoppe passed Pete Thompson on the all-time receiving touchdown list with his first touchdown grab of the 1995 season. Hoppe would go on to catch 21 more touchdowns over the next two seasons to put him in first place all-time with 49 TDs. No one else has ever caught more than 40 touchdowns in their Carroll career.
Eric Block and Mike Schultz Throw 99-Yard Passes: There have been 42 99-yard passes in DIII Football history, and Carroll has two of them. Mike Schultz connected with RJ Hoppe in 1995 against Ripon for the full-field score. A year later, Eric Block connected with RJ Hoppe AGAIN against Lake Forest for the 99-yard TD pass.
Longest Touchdown Catch: Some schools are lucky to have 90-yard touchdown passes. Carroll has two 99-yard touchdown passes in its record books, the longest catches in NCAA history. In 1995 against Ripon, Mike Schultz connected with RJ Hoppe for the 99-yard score. Just a year later against Lake Forest, Eric Block connected with…RJ Hoppe for Hoppe's second career 99-yard touchdown reception. Hoppe is one of just two players in NCAA DIII football history with TWO 99-yard touchdown receptions.
Merle Masonholder Becomes Most Winningest Coach: Going into the final game of the 1995 season, head coach Merle Masonholder was tied with Vince DiFrancesa for the most wins by a head coach in Carroll football history. Masonholder and the Pioneers pulled out a road victory at conference foe St. Norbert by a score of 33-19. Masonholder's 63 wins became the most all-time by a Carroll head coach, but he pushed the record to 88 wins all-time by the time he retired in 2000.
R.J Hoppe Eclipses 3,000 Receiving Yards: R.J Hoppe passed the great Bill Wick in 1996 with 3,000 yards receiving. Hoppe averaged 21.7 yards per catch over his four-year career and averaged 89 yards per game. Hoppe is still the only receiver in Carroll history with over 3,000 yards. Hoppe broke the 3,000-yard mark on October 5, 1996 after his 90-yard game against Lawrence in the 22-20 win.
R.J Hoppe Sets Kick off Return Record: R.J Hoppe returned a total of 59 kick offs in his career from 1993-1996, the most of any Pioneer. Rob Brester got the closest in 2002 but was still 11 returns away from the title.
Hoppe also sets Return Yards Record: Hoppe didn't just stop at total returns, but he also went on to set the all-time return yards record too. Hoppe's 1,632 returns yards is still 500 yards farther than second place. Hoppe finished his return career in 1996.
Carroll plays its 100th season: The Pioneers' 100th season in program history took place in 1997, not counting the three seasons Carroll didn't field a team. Coach Masonholder and the Pioneers won the Midwest Conference with a 5-1 record in league play, and 5-5 overall. Carroll defeated Grinnell in the Championship game by a score of 20-15 to finish out the season.
Midwest Conference Champions: The Pioneers collected a Midwest conference championship in 1997, after finishing 5-1 against conference opponents. Carroll ranked at the top of the conference in defensive yards allowed per game, giving up just 252 yards on average.
Jeff Lueck Finishes with the Most Punt Return Yards in a Career: Jeff Lueck only returned punts for two of his four years as a Pioneer (97-98), but he made those years' worth it as he set the career punt return yardage record. Lueck returned 77 punts in two seasons for 712 yards. The next closest return man only has 594 return yards. Lueck smashed Mike Sikma's record of 350 return yards, and almost surpassed it in his first year returning punts.
Eric Blocks Becomes All-Time Passing Leader: Eric Block became Carroll College's all-time passing yards leader on October 9, 1999 in the win over Monmouth College. Block's 261 yard passing performance pushed him over 5,603 yards to break Dave Weber's career record.
Eric Block becomes the First Passer with over 6,000 yards: On October 23rd, 1999, Eric Block set another milestone, becoming the first passer in Carroll history with over 6,000 career passing yards. Block's 217-yard game against Lawrence University wasn't enough to get the win, but his name would forever be enshrined in record books. Block would finish out the final three games of the season with 6,830 career passing yards to solidify his record at the top.
Eric Block Becomes First to 50 Touchdown Passes: Block also became the first Pioneer to throw 50 touchdown passes in a career the same day he set the 6,000-yard mark. Block's second and final touchdown pass to Aaron Rogahn was his 50th all-time. Block had passed Chris Roger's 45 touchdown mark earlier that season.
Eric Block Records his 500th Career Completion: In the second to last game of the 1999 season against Illinois College, Eric Block added to his numerous records by becoming the first Carroll quarterback to complete 500 passes in a career. Block's first six passes landed him in the 500 spot, and he finished his career at the top of the list, with 528 completions.
Brad Dement's Single Season Passing Record: No Pioneer has thrown for more yards in a single season than Brad Dement did in 2001. Dement broke a 29-year-old record held by Dave Anschuetz. Dement needed just 133 of his 307-yard performance at Lake Forest to break the record. Dement finished the season with 2,495 passing yards.
Most Passing Yards in a Season: In 2001 the Pioneers tossed the pigskin the farthest in program history. Carroll finished with 2,595 total passing yards, which after nine games came out to 288.3 yards per game. The Pios finished third in the Midwest Conference in Passing yards per game.
Most Team Passing Yards in a Game: On November 1, 2003, the Pioneers set the record for most passing and receiving yards in a single game with 434 against Monmouth College. Nine Pioneers recorded catches in that game, while scoring four touchdowns.
Marcus Koronkiewicz's 434 Yard Passing Game: It was Koronkiewicz's day behind center in the 35-42 loss to Monmouth on 11/1/2003 when he set the record for most passing yards in a Pioneer game and set the individual record as well. Koronkiewicz finished 35-52, throwing four touchdowns and three interceptions. Koronkiewicz had a long of 63 yards that resulted in a touchdown as well.
Adam Fletcher Catches 200th Career Passes: Fletcher caught his 200th career pass with his first reception against St. Norbert on October 15, 2005. Fletcher had passed R.J Hoppe's reception record the game before at Beloit. Fletcher remains the only Pioneer in Carroll history to catch over 200 passes and finished his career with 217 catches.
Brian Jachimek Smashes Field Goal Record: Brian Jachimek smashed Pat Belson's career field goal record when it was all said and done. On September 2, 2006 against Carthage, Jachimek tied the record with his first field goal attempt from 46 yards out. Jachimek would become the all-time leader two kicks later, making a 26 yarder in the third quarter of that game. Jachimek would go on to finish his junior and senior seasons with nine more made field goals to set the record out of reach for the next 14 years.
Pio Defense Holds Knox to 6 Yards Passing: The Knox Prairie Fire and the Carroll Pioneers faced off on October 21, 2006. Knox, who was not known for its passing, threw the ball only seven times all game, and the Pioneers limited the team to one catch for just six yards. The defense also intercepted one of the seven attempts Knox too, and the Prairie Fire quarterback was sacked once in the 24-20 win.
Most Team Interceptions in a Game (THREE TIMES): The Pioneers first set this record on 9/8/2007 against the Beloit Buccaneers in the 35-6 win. Brock Linde was the recipient of three of the four picks, which also tied Andy Ostrand's three interceptions in a game record that was set in 1991. In 2011 against Lawrence, four different Pioneers recorded an interception in the 67-16 homecoming victory on 10/8/2011. A year later, Carroll set the record AGAIN at Lawrence, intercepting the Vikings quarterback four times, including returns of 71 yards and a 15-yard pick-six.
Longest Rushing Touchdown: Carroll's longest rush from scrimmage and touchdown rush came at the hands of Bryce Crocker on 9/8/2007 against Beloit. Crocker, who already had scored three touchdowns already, scored his fourth of the day on the first play of the second half. Crocker ripped through from his own seven-yard line for the 93-yard score. No other Pioneer has rushed for a longer gain in a single carry.
Chris Rogers Becomes Carroll's most efficient passer: Before Aaron Rodgers was a household name in Wisconsin for being an efficient passer, there was Chris Rogers in Waukesha who was on track to become the most efficient passer in Carroll history. In 2007, Rogers set the Carroll completion record, previously held by Gary Bosak, with a 63.8% completion percentage. Rogers completed 459 passes while only attempting 719 in his four-year career.
Pio Defense Holds Lawrence to -58 Yards Rushing: The best rushing defense game in Pioneer history came against the Lawrence Vikings on 10/29/2008. The Pioneers defeated Lawrence 34-14. Lawrence averaged -2.0 yards per carry on their 29 rushing attempts. With the six Pioneer sacks that game, Carroll's sacks against Lawrence's Nick Maxam were credited with total losses of 40 yards. The Viking's leading rusher led the team with -2 yards on seven carries.
Kyle Bonin Records 14 Sacks in a Single Season: Kyle Bonin set the single season sack record with his 11.5 sack against Knox on 10/23/2010. Bonin passed Dan Guyette's 1990 record and went on to add two more to push his total to 13.5. Bonin averaged 1.35 sacks per game in 2010
Most Team Touchdown Passes and Catches in a Game: Carroll threw a program record six touchdown passes against Grinnell on November 6, 2010. Carroll came away at the end of it with a 40-7 win. Four different receivers caught touchdown passes, including two each from CJ Wellington and Nate Soddy. Eight receivers combined for 18 catches and 293 yards.
Chris Casper's Six Touchdown Pass Game: Chris Casper was responsible for the Carroll six touchdown passes record on November 6, 2010. Casper finished 18 for 29, throwing for 293 yards and no interceptions. Casper hit Nate Soddy for a 49-yard touchdown reception, and the next score was a 48-yard touchdown reception to CJ Wellington, all in the first half against Monmouth.
School Record for Most Yards in a Game: On September 10, 2011, Carroll recorded a record high total yards…in a loss. The Pioneers racked up 567 yards of total offense against Illinois College, but fell 34-27 in a close game. Five Carroll rushers ran for 240 yards and three scores, while two quarterbacks threw for 327 yards. Carroll's last play of the game was an interception with less than a minute remaining to seal the victory for Illinois College.
Most Team Sacks in a Game: The Pioneers had Lawrence's number on that homecoming game in October in 2011. Carroll sacked Lawrence QBs a program high eight times. Josh Zank led the team that day with 3.5 sacks. One shy of the program individual record.
Josh Zank Sets All-Time Sack Record: With his first sack of the game against Beloit on November 3, 2012, Josh Zank became Carroll football's newest all-time leading sack champion with 25 sacks. Zank would add one more to the record in the same game to finish with 26 over his four-year career.
Pio Defense Holds Beloit to 39 Total Yards: The record for best total defense by a Pioneer squad came on 11/3/2012 against Beloit in a 55-0 blowout. Carroll limited Beloit to just four first downs all game, held the Bucs to -15 yards rushing, and only allowed 54 yards through the air. Beloit ran 56 plays and averaged 0.7 yards per play on top of 12 penalties for 112 yards.
Most Rushing Yards by a Single Player: Sophomore Lamont Williams set the single game record for rushing yards in a single game on the last game of the season against Illinois College in 2012. Williams' 304 yards rushing on 38 carries for six touchdowns was a historic performance. Williams capped off his 2012 season in style, as his performance helped Carroll win 29-14 over the Blue Boys.
Lamont Williams' Six Touchdown Game: We're noticing a trend here with Lamont. Lamont Williams set the Carroll record with six rushing touchdowns all on his own against Illinois College on November 10, 2012. In the final game of the season, Lamont scored four times in the first half, including three times in the first quarter. Lamont's longest rush of the day, a gain of 58 yards, set up his fifth rushing TD of the game in the third quarter.
Lamont William's 20 Touchdown Season(s): In his sophomore season and first with the program, Lamont Williams penned his name into Carroll history with the first ever 20 rushing touchdown season. On 11/10/2012, Lamont's second touchdown of the game gave him 20 on the season, passing Steve Harris' record at 19. Williams finished with 24 rushing touchdowns in 2012. Two years later, Williams came close to breaking his record, and finished with 21 rushing touchdowns. No other Pioneer has ever had 20 rushing touchdowns in a season, let alone two seasons.
Most Rushing Yards in a Season: It was a good year to be a Carroll running back in 2013. Carroll finished the season with 2,501 yards rushing for the most ever in a season. Lamont Williams led the way with 1,316 yards to contribute to the total. The Pioneers finished the season averaging 5.22 yards per carry, with over 250 yards per game, good for 23rd most in the nation.
Longest Kick Return for a Touchdown: Lamont Williams constantly was taking kicks back to the opposing end zones on kick offs, but on 9/20/2014 against Lake Forest, Lamont took a kick back from his own four-yard line, 96 yards for the score. This is also the longest kickoff return in school history as well.
School Record for Most Touchdowns in a Game: On a mid-afternoon game on October 18, 2014, the Pioneers exploded for 11 team touchdowns, the most in a single game in Carroll history. The Pioneers went on to beat the Lawrence University Vikings, 76-7. Lamont Williams finished with three scores, Ryan Klapper had a pick-six, and Dan Verhagen started the game with a 32-yard blocked punt return.
Most Rushing Touchdowns in a Game: On that same October afternoon the Pioneers hosted Lawrence (10/18/2014), Carroll rushers reached the end zone eight times. Lamont Williams led the way with three scores, followed up with two from Tyler Schovanec. The Pios had set two records that day, but that wasn't all for the offense…
Most Rushing Yards in a Game: Carroll set a third record that afternoon against Lawrence on 10/18/2014, rushing for 436 yards. Nine rushers contributed to the largest number in program history. Lamont Williams and Bennett Kothe both rushed for over 100 yards. Carroll had only 24 negative rushing yards, to the 460 positive rushing yards. Three Pios averaged over 15 yards per carry in the victory.
