Carroll athletes make final push to qualify for nationals

Steven Hermsen, Vanessa Uitenbroek lead list of impressive finishes at Augustana Final Qualifier

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Steven Hermsen continued his record-breaking individual season in representing the Carroll University men's track and field team by winning the discus with school-record distance of 57.20 meters (or 187-feet, 8 inches) on his sixth and final attempt at the Augustana Final Qualifier held at Knowlton Outdoor Athletics Complex on Thursday. 
It was the ninth consecutive victory in the event for Hermsen, who once again shattered his own record and re-affirmed his prestigious status as the No. 1-seed in NCAA Division III according to a list compiled by TFRRS.org (Track and Field Results Reporting System) in final preparation for the upcoming NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships.
Hermsen followed with a ninth-place finish in shot put (15.12m) and is currently seeded No. 25 nationally in the event.
The standout junior thrower from De Pere, Wis., led a strong contingent of Carroll athletes attempting to improve on their season-best marks in hopes of solidifying a spot in the nationals.
James Hinkley equaled his school record by placing fourth in the hammer throw with a distance of 53.88 meters (176-10) and is seeded 33rd in the nation.
Kyle Adams, who was slated to compete in the 3,000 steeplechase and is seeded No. 24 in the nation, did not start.
Spencer Kirsteatter finished fourth in the 5,000-meter run in a time of 15:42.06 in competing at the Gregory Invitational (hosted by North Central College) in Naperville, Ill. on Wednesday evening.
Kirsteatter is seeded 28th in the nation in the 10,000 meters (30:56.03).
On the women's side of the competition at the Augustana Final Qualifier, Vanessa Uitenbroek represented the Carroll women by placing second in the discus with a season-best distance of 45.61 meters (or 149-8) to move into No. 8 in the nation in the event and placed ninth in shot put (12.83m or 42-1.25) remaining seeded 40th nationally.
Morgan Davister was ninth in discus (42.28m) and is currently seeded 16th in the nation.
Jamie Pankratz placed fifth in hammer throw with a distance of 50.72m or (166-5) and remains seeded 30th nationally.
