Women’s Basketball Building Culture with Love, Family, and Gratitude

11/8/2022 8:20:00 AM

WAUKESHA, Wis. – The Carroll University women's basketball team is gearing up for a run at a 2023 CCIW Women's Basketball Title. The Pioneers, who are coming off their best season since 2007-08, has added depth, intensity, and a new mantra centered around the letters LFG. What do those letters mean? You guessed it: love, family, and gratitude.

"Our returning group of 12 players came back after a long spring and summer with the mindset that winning a conference championship is a reality," says Head Women's Basketball Coach Lindsay Schultz, who is entering her seventh season with the Pios. "Our mantra is going for it every day." LFG, more commonly known by many as the acronym for "let's freaking go" has given the team a mental reminder to push to find another gear not just in games, but in practices as well. "It's a reminder for us that we need to take a step forward in how we prepare, practice, and play."

The secondary meaning, and more publicist friendly version, love, family, gratitude is something that Brooke Foster says compliments the other meaning of the phrase, "Love, family, and gratitude allows us to freaking go," says Foster. "It's incorporated into our culture everyday…whether we are laughing with each other or holding each other accountable on the court. The love we have allows us to push each other harder, family reminds us that no one is alone, and gratitude is exercised in our program through team building skills or perpetually throughout the season."

Fans can expect a lot of the same from the Pioneer group that climbed the ranks last season with a third-place finish in the CCIW. Strong defense, aggressive tempo, and ball sharing all around will define the team's performance. Carroll's newly added depth from the four incoming student-athletes has an opportunity to make an impact right away. "Last season, we were deep because a lot of players stepped up after injuries and situations, but now that all of the pieces are back, we're working to figure out what combinations and groups work well together," says Schultz."

The Pioneers begin the 2022 season with a home game in Van Male Field House against the MSOE Raiders at 7 PM on Tuesday, November 8.
