WAUKESHA, Wis. – First year head coach
Jacob Acevedo knows there is a large task at hand for this Carroll men's lacrosse program, but talking about lacrosse isn't his main selling point when talking about the program, "We really hammer home the fact that the education we offer here, the structure and culture that we have in place for this program, is going to set you up to a very successful individual," says Acevedo "We're going to give you every opportunity to be successful and to grow."
Acevedo leads a group of 15 into the 2022 season. As the odds are stacked against them, he knows that they can't just talk about being a good program over the next 2-3 years, they have to "be a do'er". "Doing the little things to get better each day," says senior
Danny McGee, when asked about what being a do'er has meant to the team so far this season. "Doing things outside of practice as well to stay accountable is important to the culture."
"Doesn't matter what the situation is, we have to be prepared to look at this adversity and face it," says Acevedo when asked about how being a do'er will help the program during tough times. "No matter what it is, we'll be prepared."
The program culture will focus on building better men over better lacrosse players. Acevedo is focused on building the student-athletes for a life of success. Wins on the field are important for all college lacrosse programs, but the wins off the field and in the classroom are the types of wins Acevedo is looking for. This starts by building a leadership council of athletes, a group of captains that speak up as representatives for the team "Being on the council has been great," says senior
Spencer Lautner. "there's a tight-knit group of people who can take a look at themselves on how we can all improve as teammates."
"We're planning to lay the foundation, 'dig the hole that the house will be built in'," says Acevedo, on what he wants to accomplish in his first year with the Pioneers. "There are a lot of guys that came in and worked hard to get the program to where it is today, but we want to take it to the next level."
The Carroll men's lacrosse team begins its 2022 campaign at Hanover College on Sunday, February 27.
