Pioneers Battle Against Top Competition in NCAA Tournament

LANSING, MI - One day after the Pioneers picked up their first NCAA tournament victory in program history, Carroll took on the #1 team in the nation, Jacksonville State, followed by reigning national champions, Youngstown State, that led to a day of valuable experience for a young Pioneer team in their first tournament ever.

In the morning action, Jacksonville State showed why they were the heavy favorites coming into the tournament by sweeping the Pioneers. The Gamecocks took the traditional point through impressive scores across their lineup and followed that up with even more impressive Baker performances. The Pioneers battled difficult lane conditions, but ultimately came up short against a team who is having one of the more impressive bowling seasons in NCAA history.

In their afternoon action, the Pioneers faced the reigning NCAA Champions, Youngstown State, who fell in their morning match as well. The Pioneers jumped out to a 1–0 lead in the elimination match by claiming the traditional point. Carroll built a 50-pin advantage through the first three games of the Baker pinfall point, but Youngstown State responded in game four with a 250 to swing momentum. YSU threw the front seven and won the game by 83 pins, taking a 33-pin lead into game five. Youngstown State ultimately claimed the Baker point, 917–891, to force a best-of-seven tiebreaker, which it won 4–0.

All in all, the season proved to be a massive success for Carroll and allowed the team to face some of the highest competition across all of women's bowling. Outside of massive milestones and program achievements this year, the Pioneers have built a strong foundation to grow on. This experience will prove to be invaluable as the team looks to regroup, improve, and find themselves back in the tournament once again.
