Carroll earns first victory in program history

Schultz scores four goals to lead Pioneers in season opener

Box Score WAUKESHA, Wis. - Freshman attackman Jeffery Schultz (Franklin, Wis.) scored a team-high four goals to lead the Carroll University men's lacrosse team to a 9-8 victory over the University of Northwestern in a season-opening nonconference game at Schneider Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The nail-biting performance took on added significance as it was the first victory in the history of the men's program and first for newly hired Carroll head coach Brian Nowak.
Freshman midfielder Christopher Bechtel (Sammamish, Wash.) and freshman midfielder Dannon Ivey (Grass Valley, Calif.) each contributed two goals for Carroll, which scored five unanswered goals in the momentum-shifting second quarter to extend the lead to 6-2. 
Freshman midfielder Dominic Sabbarese (Verona, Wis.) had the other goal for the Pioneers, who were outshot 40-34 in the gritty contest but maintained a critical 20-19 shot-on-goal advantage. Sophomore attackman Paul Kerchberger (Deer Park, Ill.) added two assists.
Freshman goalkeeper Abraham Escarda (Sammamish, Wash.) had six saves through 30 minutes to help preserve a victory for Carroll.
Freshman attackman Brady Minich scored a team-high four goals for University of Northwestern, who scored four times in the final quarter.
