Box Score ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Sophomore second baseman
Jordan Wermund (Stevensville, Mich.) went 2-for-3 and drove in what became the winning run on an RBI single to cap a key two-run top of the sixth inning as the Carroll University softball team outlasted Augustana College 3-2 in the first game of a College Conference of Illinois-Wisconsin doubleheader at Carver Field on Tuesday afternoon.
It was the second consecutive victory for Carroll, which improved to 3-2 in the league standings and 16-10 overall.
The Pioneers, who generated 12 hits in the contest and have won four games by a one-run margin this season - scored a single run in the first and two in the decisive sixth.
Junior left fielder
Rosalie Jrolf (Dousman, Wis.) delivered an RBI single to center field in the first and senior first baseman Kelsey Edwards (Rockford, Ill.) had a run-scoring sacrifice fly to center field in the sixth to extend the lead to 2-0 - setting the stage for Wermund's key hit.
Augustana scored two runs as the result of errors in the bottom of the seventh but couldn't complete a comeback.
Junior right-hander
Amanda Osterhus (Munster, Ind.) was the winning pitcher, scattering six hits with eight strikeouts, two walks and a hit batsman through 6 1/3 innings.
Junior right-handed relief pitcher
Lexy Kemnitzer (McFarland, Wis.) fought through the pressure of the situation in the seventh by forcing an initial groundout - then showcased her composure as Augustana trimmed the deficit to one run with two outs and potential tying run at second by forcing a game-ending groundout to earn the gritty save.
Senior right fielder
Annika Graves (Muskego, Wis.) went 3-for-4 and scored a run for Carroll, which has won six of its last seven. Jrolf added two hits for the Pioneers.Â
Augustana lost its fourth straight to drop to 1-4 in conference and 12-15 overall.
