Waukesha, Wis. – The Carroll University women's lacrosse team learned early Monday morning during the NCAA DIII Women's Lacrosse Selection Show that their season wasn't ready to end. The Pioneers were selected as an At-Large Bid to the 2021 NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championship Tournament.
The Pioneers, who come into the tournament 11-3 and 4-1 in the CCIW, enter its first NCAA Tournament in program history. This comes after finishing with its best wining percentage record in program history, claiming a three-way tie for the CCIW regular season title, and making it to the CCIW Tournament Championship game. The Pioneers also finished second in the NCAA DIII West Regional rankings. Carroll's next tasks are uncharted waters for the seven-year-old program.
"The goals are the same as always. We are fully focused on our matchup with Aurora on Sunday." Said Head Coach
Michael Hodge. "We understand that anything is possible in a tournament, so we won't take this opportunity for granted. We're happy to be representing the CCIW and Carroll University at the NCAA Tournament this year."
Carroll's first test is against a familiar face in Aurora University. The Pioneers and Spartans last played on March 13 in Schneider Stadium this season. Carroll finished the Spartans by a score of 17-8, while outscoring them 10-2 in the first half.
Clara Jelacic led the team with six goals on seven shots, with five caused turnovers and 10 draw controls.
Courtenay Karls and
Katrina Hardin both tallied four goals and an assist each, while goalkeeper
Rebecca McDaniel tallied four saves over 60 minutes.
The Spartans enter the tournament with a 10-3 overall record after winning the Northern Athletic Collegiate Conference Tournament Championships.
Round two of the NCAA Tournament will be held on campus of the University of Chicago. Live stats and live video feed will be available on the day of the game at gopios.com/wlax.
