SAINT PETER, Minn. - Several members of the Carroll University men's tennis team competed in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Midwest Regional Championships (hosted by Gustavus Adolphus College) over the weekend.
The duo of
Daniel Ezcurra, a junior from Bilbao, Spain, and
Adrian Gomez, a junior from Logrono, Spain, topped the list of strong performances for Carroll by advancing to Saturday's semifinals in the doubles flight, eventually losing to the Gustavus Adolphus College tandem of Marco Siviero and Josh Christenson 8-3.
It marks the first doubles team in men's program history to advance to the semifinals of the prestigious regional competition.
Ryan LaBelle, a sophomore from Mukwonago, Wis., advanced to Saturday's semifinals of the singles (B flight), falling to Juan Hernandez of Luther College in straight sets 6-2, 6-3.
LaBelle's trip to the semifinals was highlighted by straight-set victories over Alex Palomar of Coe College and Geoffrey Stoughton of Luther College on Friday. He followed with a gritty three-set victory over Keegan McLaughlin of Grinnell College on Saturday followed by a straight-set quarterfinal victory over Tiago de Felicio of Luther College.Â
Andrew LaBelle, a sophomore from Mukwonago, Wis., and
David Eman, a sophomore from Harnosand, Sweden, each advanced to the consolation quarterfinals in singles for the Pioneers.
The singles and doubles champions and runners up from the ITA Regional Championships will advance to the ITA Cup. The ITA Cup is comprised of the eight regional champions (and/or at-large selections) from NCAA Divisions II and III, NAIA, and junior/community colleges. Over 8,000 student-athletes from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA, Junior and Community Colleges compete at one of the 84 USTA/ITA Regional Championships held across the country.
