ST. PETER, Minn. – Carroll's men's tennis team completed their 2024 Fall season over the weekend, competing at the ITA Midwest Regional and Midwest Open, hosted by Gustavus Adolphus.
In the ITA draw Carroll sported three athletes for singles.
Adrian Gomez who attained a 9 seed, Dani Ezcurra a 17 seed, and Andrew Labelle who was unseeded were able to compete with the best singles players in the region. Dani Ezcurra got to take on UW-Whitewater's Andrew Dumbauld in the second round. Ezcurra defeated the Warhawk in thrilling fashion winning 6-2 4-6 11-9. Ezcurra was defeated by Luther in the third round. Andrew Labelle was able to get through the first round as his opponent had retired. Labelle then faced a familiar foe in Igor Chavez from UW-Superior. Labelle had faced him in 2022 and was victorious, but this year would be different. Chavez defeated Labelle in the tiebreak 5-7 6-1 10-8.
The Midwest Open B singles draw held five Pioneers,
Mark Trinka,
Jack McCaffery,
David Eman, Ryan Labelle, and
Felix Persson.
Mark Trinka defeated Coe 6-1 6-0 and UW-Eau Claire 6-3 6-2, but ultimately fell in a tiebreaker to Saint John's 6-2 5-7 7-10. Ryan Labelle faced Carleton's Akshay Garapati in the first round, they had a battle, but ultimately Carroll was victorious winning 6-4 0-6 10-8. Labelle's journey was not going to get any easier, as he had to face Coe's Jumpei Kasai. Labelle would fall in the second round much like his twin brother 4-6 6-3 8-10.
All four Carroll doubles teams were selected to compete in the ITA Doubles bracket.
Adrian Gomez and Dani Ezcurra obtained a 9 seed. They advanced in the first round after defeating St. Scholastica 8-4. The senior duo continued to fight defeating UW-Whitewater's Parker Sprague and Cole Lindwall 8-4. Ezcurra and Gomez were on to face their toughest competition yet. They had to face the 2 seed of Gustavus Adolphus, last year's winners of the National ITA Cup and the same team that eliminated Ezcurra and Gomez last year in the semifinals. The result would be the same as Gustavus Adolphus would win 8-5 en route to the quarterfinals.
Felix Persson and Andrew Labelle teamed up to defeat St. Scholastica in thrilling fashion winning 8-7. They unfortunately were defeated by conference foe and 5-seeded Carthage in the next round.
Mark Trinka and Jack McCaffrey went up against 9th-seeded Carleton, in what turned out to be a battle Carroll completed the upset winning 8-6. In the next round, they would take on MSOE, in what turned out to be another fight Carroll fell 7-8 5-7 in a tiebreaker.
All but one doubles team for Carroll made it to the second day in the main draw, but that does not mean Ryan Labelle and
David Eman did not have success. As in the consolation bracket, they defeated Northwestern, St. Scholastica, and UW-Stevens Point before falling in a grueling match against UW-Superior in the semifinals.
Carroll had a successful final weekend of the men's fall season and will look to build on that performance during the winter offseason, before beginning their 2025 spring season in January.
